Snails and shrimp are usually the first animals a new keeper adds after the fish, and they are also the first to disappear quietly behind the rock. Beginner aquarium inverts are not cleanup equipment and they are not disposable. They have narrower tolerances than most of the fish sold on the next shelf, and they feel the exact conditions a young tank produces. Choose sensible species, add them in a sensible order, and they will graze film algae, turn the sand and clear leftover food for years. Choose badly and you replace them every few months. After thirty years stocking tanks around Chicago, we see the same few decisions separate those outcomes.
Beginner aquarium inverts do real work, but not the work you expect
A snail is a grazer, not a cure for a nutrient problem. Trochus and cerith snails strip film algae and diatoms off glass and rock, and they are very good at it. They will not touch a mature mat of hair algae, they will not eat cyanobacteria, and they cannot pull phosphate out of the water. If your rock is covered in green filament, the cause is feeding, flow or nutrient export, and a bag of snails only hides the symptom for a week or two.
Shrimp work differently. Skunk cleaner shrimp scavenge uneaten food and will pick at cooperative fish, peppermint shrimp often eat aiptasia anemones, and in fresh water, amano shrimp graze soft algae and biofilm harder than anything else their size. None of them are janitors in the sense people mean. They compete for the same food your fish eat, they produce waste of their own, and a crew that is too large for the tank starves slowly instead of cleaning.
Expectations matter because they drive stocking numbers. A crew sized for a tank at its dirtiest runs out of food once the system matures and the algae film thins. We would rather add a small group, watch how fast the glass fouls over three or four weeks, then top up, than hand somebody thirty snails for a forty-gallon tank on day one. The same logic applies to shrimp, where two healthy animals beat six thin ones.

Start with snails and match the species to your substrate
In a reef or a fish-only marine tank, split the job by surface. Trochus snails work glass and rock and can usually right themselves after a fall, which is why we prefer them to astraea snails, which often cannot and die on their backs in the sand. Cerith snails cover both the glass and the top layer of substrate. Nassarius snails live buried and surface when food hits the sand, keeping the bed turned so detritus does not compact into anaerobic pockets.
Freshwater tanks have a shorter list. Nerite snails are the workhorse: they graze diatoms and film algae, tolerate a wide temperature range, and their eggs will not hatch in fresh water, so they cannot overrun a tank. Mystery snails are larger, more visible and more entertaining, though they need adequate calcium to hold a shell. Ramshorn and bladder snails usually arrive on plants without an invitation, and their population tracks how much you overfeed rather than anything else.
Stocking density is the question we hear most, and there is no exact answer. A common starting point is one grazing snail per two or three gallons in a marine tank, revised down as the system matures. Shell condition depends on chemistry rather than food, so hold alkalinity in the usual 8 to 11 dKH band, calcium near 400 to 450 ppm and salinity steady between 1.024 and 1.026 specific gravity. Pitted, eroding shells are the first sign one of those has drifted.
Shrimp come second, and tankmates decide the species
Add shrimp once the tank has held steady for a while, because they forgive swinging parameters far less than snails do. In a marine system, skunk cleaner shrimp are the usual first choice: hardy, visible, and willing to set up a cleaning station within days. Peppermint shrimp are the practical pick if aiptasia has appeared, though results vary between individual animals. Fire shrimp are striking but shy, and many spend their first month wedged in a cave where you will rarely see them.
Freshwater keepers generally choose between amano and neocaridina shrimp. Amano shrimp are larger, plainer and considerably better at eating algae. Cherry shrimp and their color morphs stay smaller, breed readily in a planted tank and give you a self-sustaining population if nothing hunts them. Both prefer moderately hard water in the region of 4 to 8 dGH, and neither tolerates copper in any form, which rules out several common medications and a few plant fertilizers.
Tankmates end the conversation faster than water chemistry does. Hawkfish, most dottybacks, larger wrasses, triggers and puffers treat shrimp as food, and a coral banded shrimp will kill smaller shrimp itself. The order you add beginner aquarium inverts decides who survives
Order matters because a tank's chemistry is least stable in its first months, and inverts register that instability before fish do. Wait until the cycle has genuinely finished, meaning ammonia and nitrite both read zero on two tests a week apart and nitrate is accumulating. A tank still showing a trace of ammonia will kill snails without visibly troubling a damsel. There is no rush, since the algae film a cleanup crew eats needs time to establish across rock and glass.
Once the tank is genuinely cycled, the sequence below spreads the biological load and leaves you time to catch a problem early. Each step assumes the one before it went well, with every animal feeding, moving and holding position:
Add three or four grazing snails, drip acclimated over 45 to 90 minutes.
Wait two to three weeks and confirm every snail grazes, moves and rights itself.
Add sand-sifting snails such as nassarius once waste has settled into the substrate.

Drip acclimation is not optional here. Shrimp and snails react far more sharply than fish to a sudden shift in salinity, pH or temperature, and a fast float-and-dump transfer is one of the most common reasons a new shrimp dies inside 48 hours. Run a slow drip, match temperature first, and never pour bag water into the display. What actually kills beginner aquarium inverts in a young tank
Copper is the first killer and the least forgivable, because it is entirely avoidable. Copper-based fish medications are lethal to snails and shrimp at normal therapeutic doses, and copper binds to rock and sand and leaches back out for a long time afterward. If a display has ever been treated with copper, treat it as unsuitable for inverts until the rock is replaced. Medicate sick fish in a separate quarantine tank instead, because that one habit protects the entire crew.
Salinity and temperature swings come next. Evaporation during a dry Chicago winter can push salinity up noticeably within a week on a small tank with no auto top-off, and inverts feel it long before the fish look stressed. Starvation is the quieter problem. A mature, well-exported reef can become too clean for a large crew, and snails that run out of film algae thin out over months. Predation and molting finish the list. A shrimp is most vulnerable in the hours after a molt, while the new shell is soft, so rockwork with a cave it can retreat into matters more than any supplement. New keepers often find the discarded exoskeleton lying in the open and assume the animal has died. Leave the shed shell where it is and the shrimp will eat it back for the calcium.
