Five Reef Tank Mistakes Beginners Make (and Fixes)

Most struggling reef tanks are not unlucky. They are the predictable result of four or five reef tank mistakes that nearly every beginner makes in the first year, usually with good intentions and on advice that sounded reasonable at the time. Each one has a specific symptom, a cause you can name, and a correction you can start this week.

The reef tank mistakes that start before the first fish goes in

The first symptom is usually a fish that looked perfect at the shop and is breathing hard by the second morning. Ammonia reads above zero, nitrite follows a few days later, and a brown film creeps across the sand while everything else still looks new. Nobody did anything cruel here. The system simply did not carry enough bacteria on the rock and in the sand to process waste at the rate a stocked display produces it, and the livestock absorbed the difference.

The cause is almost always a cycle that was declared finished early. Dry rock in a new build needs roughly four to eight weeks to develop a working bacterial population, and rock borrowed from an established system shortens that without eliminating it. A cycle is genuinely over when a deliberate ammonia dose of around 2 ppm falls to zero within twenty-four hours and nitrite reads zero at the same time. Clear water proves nothing at all, because bacteria are invisible and the test kit is the only honest witness available.

The correction is patience with a schedule attached. Finish the cycle, run a large water change to bring nitrate down, then add a modest cleanup crew of snails and a couple of hermits and watch for a week. One or two hardy fish come next, a pair of ocellaris clownfish or a single royal gramma, and then nothing new for two or three weeks while the biological filter grows into the load. Skipping quarantine imports pests you will spend months removing

Six weeks after a shopping trip, the symptom arrives as something you never bought. Aiptasia anemones appear at the base of a favorite colony, a montipora plate bleaches from the edge inward overnight, or every fish in the display starts flicking against the rock. Nothing else changed except the newest addition, and by the time you notice, the pest or parasite has had a month of undisturbed breeding inside a warm system with no predators and abundant food.

The cause is the shortcut that feels harmless: bag to acclimation, acclimation to display. Marine ich, velvet, red planaria, montipora-eating nudibranchs, vermetid snails and aiptasia all travel on livestock that looks healthy under shop lighting. Frag plugs are the worst offenders, because their undersides and drill holes shelter eggs that survive a casual rinse. One fish moved straight into a display can seed a parasite population that outlasts every treatment you can safely run around corals.

The correction is two habits rather than one purchase. Fish go into a separate observation tank for four to six weeks with nothing else in it, which is long enough for most parasite life cycles to show themselves while treatment is still simple. Corals get dipped, inspected under good light and moved onto fresh plugs before they touch the display. Chasing test numbers causes more reef tank mistakes than neglect does

This one looks like bad luck and is not. Tissue recedes from the base of an acropora over two days, an euphyllia that opened beautifully last week stays shut, or the tips of a healthy colony burn pale the morning after somebody corrected a reading. The tank was fine on Monday and unhappy on Thursday, and the only thing that changed was an attempt to make a number look better on paper.

The cause is that corals respond to swings far more than to values. A single test result triggers a large correction dose, the parameter overshoots, and the next test triggers a correction the other way. Old reagents, a refractometer never calibrated since it left the box, and two brands of kit that disagree by a full dKH all feed the cycle. Alkalinity punishes this hardest, because it moves quickly and stony corals notice immediately.

The correction is to hold steady targets and move slowly toward them. Typical reef ranges are salinity 1.024 to 1.026 sg, temperature 76 to 79 degrees Fahrenheit, alkalinity 8 to 11 dKH, calcium 400 to 450 ppm and magnesium 1250 to 1350 ppm. Pick one point inside each range and defend it. Test with the same kit at the same time of day, replace reagents before they expire, and never move alkalinity more than about half a dKH in a day.

Overfeeding and zero-nutrient tanks are two sides of one problem

The symptoms sit at opposite ends and both trace back to nutrient balance. On the heavy side, hair algae colonizes the rock, cyanobacteria sheets over the sand in red-purple mats, and the glass needs scraping every second day. On the starved side, corals go pale and lose color rather than tissue, coralline stops advancing, and a brown, stringy dinoflagellate bloom appears that no cleanup crew will touch.

The cause on the heavy side is simple: food goes in faster than export takes it out, and three cubes of frozen food in a lightly filtered tank leaves the surplus for algae. The starved side is usually deliberate, produced by aggressive skimming, a full reactor of GFO and carbon dosing all running at once until nitrate and phosphate read zero. Zero is not a target. Corals need some nitrogen and phosphorus, and dinoflagellates thrive precisely where nothing else can compete.

The correction is to aim for a low but measurable range and to adjust one variable at a time. Most mixed reefs run well with nitrate somewhere around 2 to 10 ppm and phosphate around 0.03 to 0.10 ppm. Feed smaller portions more often rather than one heavy meal, target-feed LPS instead of broadcasting for them, and change export gradually so the tank drifts toward the range over weeks. Rapid stripping of nutrients causes more coral loss than mild excess ever does.

Drifting salinity and an unplanned routine undo careful work

The last symptom is the most seasonal one in this climate. Salinity climbs through January while nobody notices, corals close earlier each evening, alkalinity consumption changes, and a tank that ran beautifully in October looks tired by February. Nothing broke. The water level simply fell a little further each day than the top-off replaced, and the concentration of everything dissolved in the tank rose with it.

The cause is evaporation meeting an unmanaged routine. Forced-air heat in a Chicago winter pulls moisture hard, an open-top reef can lose several percent of its volume in a week, and salt does not evaporate with the water. Add a top-off that was never tested, a refractometer calibrated against tap water rather than a 35 ppt standard, and a schedule that depends on remembering, and the drift stays invisible until the livestock reports it.

The correction is mechanical rather than heroic, and the order matters, because a tank that has drifted for months cannot absorb five changes at once. Fix the measurement first, then the water, then the equipment that keeps both steady, and only then the habits that hold it together. Give each step a few days to settle before starting the next.
