A 15-gallon reef can hold as much life as a 75, but it will not hold as many mistakes. Nano reef stocking is an exercise in arithmetic, because every fish you add and every cube of frozen food you thaw lands in a volume small enough to notice. That is not an argument for keeping a small tank understocked and dull. It is an argument for deciding the whole list before the first animal goes into a bag. Nano reef stocking starts with the water you actually have

The number on the box is a shipping dimension, not a volume of seawater. A ten-gallon all-in-one gives up close to a gallon to displacement once you add rock, another to an inch of sand, and more to rear chambers running below their fill line. What you are really stocking is nearer seven gallons. Measure it once with a marked container, and write the figure inside the cabinet door. Every dose and every water change after that depends on that number being honest.

Small volumes also move fast. A tank evaporating a quart a day in a dry Chicago apartment loses over one percent of its water every twenty-four hours, and salinity climbs with it. Top off by hand at irregular hours and the salinity trace looks like a saw blade, and that low-grade stress shows up later as closed polyps and faded color. An automatic top-off with a float switch and a small reservoir is not a luxury on a tank this size. It is the cheapest stability you can buy.

Those proportions work in your favor during maintenance. A weekly change of ten to twenty percent is a gallon or two, so saltwater can be mixed and aged in a bucket instead of a barrel. Hold salinity at 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity, temperature between 76 and 79 degrees and alkalinity in the 8 to 11 dKH band, then let new water match the tank rather than correct it. Bioload math for tanks under 20 gallons

Bioload is not measured in inches of fish. It is measured by what you put into the water, because everything you feed becomes either tissue or nitrate and phosphate. One cube of frozen mysis thawed into a seven-gallon system is a serious nutrient event, while the same cube in a 120 disappears. Nano reef stocking therefore works backward from the feeding schedule. Decide how many animals you will feed daily, then decide which ones those are.

A workable rule for small reefs is one small fish per five gallons of real water, counting adult size rather than the size in the bag. A tailspot blenny topping out near two inches is a different animal from a clownfish that thickens to three and claims a corner of the rockwork. Territory counts as much as waste, since two fish that want the same overhang will argue however clean the water is. Corals belong in the budget too, since a growing colony shades the rock beneath it.

Export on a small reef is water changes plus a little help. Most tanks this size run no skimmer, so nitrate around 2 to 10 ppm and phosphate near 0.03 to 0.10 ppm are held by scheduled water changes, a little carbon or a phosphate binder, and sometimes macroalgae in a rear chamber. Test weekly and watch the direction of travel rather than any single reading. If nitrate climbs between changes, the tank is overfed or overstocked.

What actually counts against a small tank's budget:

  • Adult size and adult appetite, never the size of the animal in the bag

  • How often you feed, and how much lands in the rock instead of a mouth

  • Territory, since two bottom dwellers wanting one cave is a stocking error

  • Coral biomass, which shades rock and consumes alkalinity

  • Whether an automatic top-off runs, since manual topping caps what a nano carries

A 10-gallon nano reef stocking plan built around one fish

Ten gallons is a one-fish tank, and that fish should be small, sedentary and disinclined to jump. A tailspot blenny (Ecsenius stigmatura), a yellow clown goby (Gobiodon okinawae) or a pygmy goby from the Eviota and Trimma groups all suit that footprint and perch where you can see them. Around it, five or six Trochus and Cerith snails handle film algae, while one peppermint shrimp or a pair of sexy shrimp (Thor amboinensis) adds movement without a real feeding load.

For corals, the forgiving families happen to be the ones that stay small. Zoanthids, Discosoma mushrooms and Ricordea tolerate the swings a small volume produces and can be moved on their plugs when the layout changes. One Duncan head or a single acan colony gives you a fleshy centerpiece without the light an SPS colony wants. Leave bare rock between placements. Encrusting corals close those gaps within a year, and a nano with no room left is one where every coral fights its neighbor.

The list of things to leave out is short and specific. Damselfish and most wrasses want more swimming room than ten gallons offers. A clownfish pair holds a tank this size hostage as it matures. Hermit crabs knock frags loose and kill snails for shells in tight quarters. Anemones are the expensive mistake, since a bubble tip can wander into a powerhead, outgrow the display and take coral with it if it dies. Anything you would later have to catch is worth skipping now.

Fifteen gallons buys a pair and a little more coral

At fifteen gallons of real water you choose between two structures. Either a bonded pair of captive-bred ocellaris clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris) and nothing else with fins, or a yellow watchman goby (Cryptocentrus cinctus) hosting a pistol shrimp. Both are a single social unit rather than two competing ones, which is why they work in this volume. Add six to eight small snails and one shrimp, then stop until the tank has run for a few months.

Coral choice widens here. Hammer, frogspawn and torch corals in the Euphyllia group do well under moderate light, though they need four to six inches of clearance because their sweeper tentacles reach further at night than the colony suggests by day. Duncans and acans fill the middle of the rockwork, and an encrusting Montipora works if your light supports it. Green star polyps and larger Sarcophyton leathers spread fast, and a leather can chemically suppress everything downstream.

Once coral biomass grows, chemistry moves between water changes. Alkalinity bites first, and a tank consuming half a dKH a day looks steady for a week before color drops after one missed change. Two-part dosing works at this scale, but the doses are tiny and a slip of the syringe is a real swing, so many owners do better with slightly larger, more frequent water changes and one salt mix. Either way, test alkalinity twice a week and change one variable at a time.

Twenty gallons is where a nano starts to feel roomy

Twenty gallons is the first size where a small community stops feeling like a compromise. A clownfish pair plus one goby or blenny is realistic, as is a single firefish (Nemateleotris magnifica) behind a tightly fitted lid, since firefish jump for a living. The crew scales with the footprint rather than the fish: eight to ten mixed snails, a couple of Nassarius in the sand bed and, if hair algae takes hold, one emerald crab (Mithraculus sculptus). It is worth seeing which invertebrates and corals we carry first.

Order matters more than the finished list. Inverts and corals go in first, since they add almost nothing to the bioload. The least aggressive fish follows, then the more territorial one, with three or four weeks between additions so the biological filter can catch up and the newcomer is not walking into an established claim. Quarantine anything with fins if you have a spare container and heater, and dip every coral before it touches display rock.

Pace is the discipline most people abandon first. A nano stocked to capacity in three weeks usually spends its first year fighting algae, and the owner usually blames the light. Build the list on paper, buy in the order above, and give the system a season to settle between the last coral and the last fish.
