
Natural Pest Control: Shrimp, Crabs, Snails and Conchs

The most useful aquarium pest control tool we own is an accurate identification. Aiptasia, majano, bubble algae, hair algae, detritus and diatom film all look like the same general dirtiness from the front glass, and each one has a different animal that will eat it. Buy the wrong one and you have added a mouth that competes with your corals for food. Buy the right one and the problem thins out over a few weeks without a single treatment going into the water. Here is our matching list, pest by pest, along with the cases where no invertebrate is going to save you.
Aquarium pest control starts with naming the pest correctly
Aiptasia has long tapered tentacles, a visible stalk and a fast retreat into the rock when you come near it. Majano anemones sit lower, keep shorter tentacles with bulbous tips and do not retract nearly as quickly. Bubble algae appears as single or clustered green spheres with a tough skin. Hair algae is soft and long, turf algae is short and wiry, diatoms dust everything brown in a young tank, and cyanobacteria forms a sheet with gas bubbles that peels off in one piece.
Take a photo and enlarge it before you buy anything. Half of what gets called a pest is harmless or actively useful: most bristle worms are detritivores, spaghetti worms and spionids filter feed, and copepods and amphipods are food. Almost every grazer in the hobby is a specialist rather than a generalist, which is the whole logic behind this approach. A turbo snail will not touch aiptasia, a peppermint shrimp will not clear hair algae, and a nassarius snail ignores both because it is waiting for leftover food. That is also why a single boxed cleanup crew rarely solves a specific problem, since it is a bundle of specialists chosen for an average tank rather than yours. The matches worth remembering:

Aiptasia and majano anemones need a predator, not a scalpel
Cutting or scraping an aiptasia is the reliable way to get ten of them. The animal releases fragments from its pedal disc, and every scrap that lands in the rockwork becomes a new colony a few weeks later. The same is true of siphoning off a damaged one. If a rock is badly infested and it is not load-bearing in the aquascape, taking it out of the display and letting it sit dry or in the dark is often faster than any biological approach.
Peppermint shrimp are the usual first choice, and species matters. Lysmata wurdemanni is the one that eats aiptasia; the west coast look-alikes sold under the same common name mostly do not. Add several rather than one, expect them to work at night, and accept that they prefer small polyps to large established ones. Berghia stephanieae is the specialist option: obligate aiptasia feeders that will clear a system given enough numbers, then starve once the food is gone.
Fish can help if the tank suits them. Copperband butterflyfish eat aiptasia in a mature system with plenty of live rock, though they are difficult feeders and many never settle. Matted filefish work well until they discover your zoanthids, and neither fish belongs in a tank too small to hold it comfortably once the aiptasia is gone. Majano anemones have fewer dependable predators than aiptasia does, so those usually come out by hand with the rock pulled and worked on outside the tank.
Bubble algae, hair algae and film each need a different grazer
Bubble algae is emerald crab territory. Mithraculus sculptus will pick at Valonia and Ventricaria, and a common starting ratio is one crab per 20 to 30 gallons. Results vary between individuals, some ignore it entirely, and a hungry emerald crab will eventually go after leftover food, snails or soft coral. Feed the tank properly and the crab stays honest. Never pop bubbles inside the display, since a burst cell scatters spores across the rock.
Hair algae is a volume problem, so it needs volume eaters. Turbo snails clear a surprising amount of green in a week, but they bulldoze frags off the rockwork and starve once the tank is clean. Sea hares do the same job faster and then need rehoming. Lettuce nudibranchs and tuxedo urchins graze more gently, though an urchin will decorate itself with anything not glued down. None of them touches bryopsis with any reliability.
Film algae and diatoms are the easiest category. Trochus snails graze glass and rock and can right themselves when they fall, which astraea snails cannot do. Cerith snails work the sand and glass at night and are among the most useful animals in a reef. Roughly one grazing snail per 2 to 5 gallons is a common starting point, but stock in stages and watch how quickly the glass films over before adding more.
Detritus and leftover food are a conch and snail job
Nassarius snails are the scavengers, not the grazers. They bury themselves in the sand, emerge within seconds of food hitting the water, and clean up anything that dies in the rockwork before it fouls. They will not eat algae, so nobody should buy them for that. A common rate is one per 5 gallons in a tank with an established sand bed, and they are one of the few inverts that visibly earn their place at feeding time.
Fighting conchs are excellent sand bed animals with a real requirement attached: surface area. A conch needs an established bed of at least a couple of inches and a footprint that gives it room to work, which usually means one animal in a 30 gallon tank or larger. In a bare-bottom system or a nano, they slowly starve. Cerith snails cover the same ground at night and manage in much smaller volumes.
Two popular choices deserve a warning. Sand-sifting starfish strip the microfauna out of a bed and then die of starvation months later, taking the biodiversity with them. Diamond and sleeper gobies sift beautifully but spray sand across corals below them. Remember also that moving detritus around is not exporting it: a clean-looking sand bed can still be feeding your nitrate and phosphate every time the flow stirs it.
Where natural aquarium pest control stops working
Grazers are converters, not exporters. A snail that eats hair algae turns it into ammonia, which becomes nitrate, which grows more algae. The nutrients only leave the system through water changes, skimming, macroalgae harvests or filter media that you actually replace. Some pests have no dependable predator at all. Cyanobacteria, dinoflagellates, vermetid snails and hydroids are managed with flow, nutrients, light and patience rather than livestock. Red flatworms do have predators, including the blue velvet nudibranch and some wrasses, but a large die-off releases toxins into the water, so siphoning the bulk out first is safer than letting a predator wipe out a heavy population overnight. Run carbon afterward and keep a water change mixed and ready.
Crew husbandry decides whether any of this works. Drip acclimate invertebrates over 60 to 90 minutes, match salinity to a typical 1.024 to 1.026 range, and keep copper-based medications out of the system permanently. Give hermit crabs a range of spare shells or they will take one from a snail. Add animals in stages, and once the tank is genuinely clean, start feeding the crew directly rather than watching it slowly thin out.

Will a cleanup crew fix an algae bloom by itself?
It will reduce the visible symptom, which buys you time, but the nutrients that fueled the bloom stay in the system. Combine the crew with water changes, a tuned skimmer, sensible feeding and any nutrient export you run. Crews maintain a clean tank far better than they rescue a dirty one.
Does any of this apply to a freshwater tank?
The principle carries over, though the animals change. Nerite snails graze film algae without breeding in fresh water, amano shrimp work on soft hair algae, and otocinclus catfish handle glass and leaf surfaces. Freshwater has no aiptasia equivalent, so most pest work there is snails, algae and planaria instead.
How many invertebrates should I add at one time?
Add in stages over several weeks rather than all at once. A large crew dropped into a tank with limited food starves within a couple of months, and the resulting die-off is an ammonia problem on top of the original one. Stock lightly, watch how fast surfaces film over, then add more.
