Cloudy Aquarium Water: Causes and Fixes That Last

The first instinct is usually to change the water, and roughly half the time that makes the problem worse. Cloudy aquarium water is a symptom with four common and very different causes, and the fix for one of them prolongs another. A white bacterial haze, a dusty cloud of substrate fines, a green tint of suspended algae and the yellow-brown of tannins all look like the same complaint from across the room, but they behave differently and they respond to different treatment. Reading the tank properly takes about five minutes and saves a week of guessing.

Diagnose cloudy aquarium water before you change anything

Three observations narrow it down almost every time. Note the color and whether it is uniform or settles toward the bottom. Note how quickly it appeared, since a haze that developed over 24 to 48 hours behaves differently from one that has crept in over a fortnight. Then work out what changed just before it started, because new substrate, a new fish, a medication, a filter cleaning, a heavier feeding schedule or a holiday feeder block sit behind the majority of cases we get called out to.

Test before you treat. Ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH take ten minutes with a liquid kit and they change the diagnosis entirely. Cloudy water with ammonia at zero is a nuisance. Cloudy water with ammonia reading 0.5 ppm is an emergency for the fish, and the cloudiness is the least of it. In a tank set up within the last month, a haze alongside rising ammonia usually means the biological filter is still establishing rather than that anything has gone wrong.

A white or grey haze is almost always a bacterial bloom

The bloom is a population explosion of heterotrophic bacteria, which feed on dissolved organic carbon rather than ammonia. They are not the nitrifying bacteria you cultivated during cycling, and they multiply far faster. Give them a sudden supply of organics, from a dead fish behind the rockwork, a week of heavy feeding, a disturbed layer of detritus or a filter cartridge that was thrown out and replaced, and the water goes milky in a day or two as billions of them suspend themselves in the column.

The fix is to remove the food supply and then leave the tank alone. Find and remove any dead fish or snail, stop feeding for two days, vacuum the substrate gently in one section and check that the filter is actually flowing rather than bypassing a clogged pad. Do not tear the filter down, do not replace all the media and do not do a 90 percent water change. Each of those removes bacteria or fresh organics in a way that extends the bloom rather than ending it.

Left with nothing to eat, a bloom clears on its own in two to seven days. A UV sterilizer will clear the column in 24 to 48 hours, which is worth doing on a display tank, though it treats the appearance rather than the cause. Water clarifiers clump particles so mechanical filtration can catch them, and they can clog a filter pad quickly, so keep an eye on flow if you use one. If ammonia reads above 0.25 ppm, change water for the fish regardless of the bloom.

Fine particulate cloudiness traces back to substrate and filtration

Particulate haze is mechanical rather than biological. New sand or gravel that went in without rinsing releases dust for days. Fine sand kicked up by a filter return, a burrowing loach or an enthusiastic gravel vacuum stays suspended because the grains are light enough to ride the current. Crushed coral and aragonite are the worst offenders. The tell is that the cloud settles onto surfaces when the pumps are switched off and swirls up again when they restart.

Mechanical filtration solves it directly. Put a fine polishing pad or a layer of filter floss in the last chamber of the filter, run it for 24 to 48 hours and then replace it rather than rinsing it, because a loaded pad restricts flow. Raising turnover helps by giving the water more passes through the media. Rinsing substrate in a bucket before it goes in the tank, until the runoff is close to clear, prevents the whole problem at the source.

Persistent particulate cloudiness in an established tank usually means the filter is undersized, the media is exhausted or water is bypassing a clogged cartridge through the overflow path. Check flow at the return, look for a gap between the cartridge and the housing, and replace mechanical media on a schedule rather than when you notice a problem. Green water is suspended algae driven by light and nutrients

Green water is a bloom of single-celled algae living in the water column rather than on surfaces, and it needs two things at once. The first is light, usually a tank sitting in direct sun for part of the day or running a photoperiod of ten hours or more. The second is nutrients, typically nitrate above 40 ppm or phosphate accumulating from heavy feeding. Take away either input and the bloom cannot sustain itself, which is what every effective treatment does.

A blackout works and costs nothing. Wrap the tank in a blanket or heavy paper for three to four days, leave the light off, skip feeding and keep the filter running. The algae die off for lack of light while the fish are unbothered by a few dark days. Follow it immediately with a 40 percent water change and a substrate vacuum to export the dead cells, or the decaying algae simply feeds a bacterial bloom behind it.

Prevention matters more here than treatment because green water recurs whenever the conditions return. Put the light on a timer at six to eight hours, move the tank out of direct sun or shade that window, and keep nitrate down with consistent water changes rather than sporadic large ones. Tannins, microbubbles and the fixes that make cloudy aquarium water stay gone

Tannins are the one cause that is not really a problem. Driftwood, catappa leaves, oak leaf litter and peat all leach organic acids that tint the water yellow to brown while leaving it perfectly clear. Many soft-water species show better colors in it. If you want it gone, soak or boil new wood before it goes in, run activated carbon or a resin in the filter for a week or two, and change water on the normal schedule until the leaching slows.

Microbubbles are the impostor in this group. A milky sheen that appears right after a water change or a filter service, then clears from the top down within ten or fifteen minutes, is air entrained by a loose fitting, a low sump water level or a pump drawing in air. Fill a clean glass from the tank and hold it to the light. If the glass clears while the tank stays hazy, the problem is in the water. If both clear, it was gas.

Lasting clarity comes from the routine rather than from any product. Size the filter for four to six times the tank volume per hour, replace polishing media on a schedule, feed what the fish clear in about a minute, vacuum a different third of the substrate at each water change, and keep the light on a timer.
