The tanks that eat entire weekends are almost always the ones that went two months without a water change and then needed rescuing. Consistency also matters more than volume. A 25 percent change every week holds parameters far steadier than a 60 percent change once a month, because the fish never experience a large swing in water chemistry. Water can look flawless and still be wrong. A liquid test kit costs less than one replacement fish and gives you numbers to act on. For an established community tank, ammonia and nitrite should read zero every time, nitrate should stay under roughly 20 to 40 ppm depending on stocking and plants, and temperature should sit steady somewhere around 74 to 78 degrees Fahrenheit for most tropical species.
Stability beats any specific target. A pH of 7.8 that never moves is better than a pH of 7.0 you chase with buffers every week, and most common community fish adapt to local tap water parameters far better than they adapt to swings.
