Professional aquarium cleaning is a sequence of tasks in a deliberate order, and the order matters, because testing water you have already stirred tells you very little. We service tanks weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly and monthly across Chicago and the suburbs, and a visit follows the same shape every time. What the first ten minutes of professional aquarium cleaning look like

Nothing gets touched at first. A technician watches the fish before the room fills with activity, because clamped fins, rapid gilling, a tang hiding in the rockwork or a coral with polyps closed at midday are all easier to see in an undisturbed tank. Feeding response is the fastest health check available. The cabinet gets the same attention. Puddles, a salt crust on the sump lip, corrosion on plug prongs, a drip loop that has gone slack. A wet spot the size of a coin under a union is the cheapest problem you will ever repair, and it is invisible from the front of the tank. The auto top-off reservoir tells its own story: unusually fast evaporation since the last visit points to a heater working overtime, an open lid or a room that has changed temperature.

Only after that does the physical work begin, and it runs in a fixed order for a reason. Cleaning before testing skews the readings, and changing water before the glass is scraped leaves the debris behind to settle again. The sequence below is what a full visit looks like from the first bucket to the last plug.

Testing tells the technician what the tank actually needs

Testing happens on undisturbed water. Salinity comes first on a marine system, and we want to see 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity on a refractometer that has been calibrated, not a swing-arm hydrometer. Alkalinity in the 8 to 11 dKH range, calcium around 400 to 450 ppm and magnesium near 1,250 to 1,350 ppm are typical reef targets. Ammonia and nitrite should read zero on any established tank. On freshwater we test pH, carbonate hardness, nitrate and temperature instead.

Numbers matter less individually than as a pattern. Alkalinity that has fallen since the last visit usually means coral growth has outpaced dosing rather than a test kit error. Nitrate climbing while phosphate stays flat often points at feeding rather than filtration. Salinity that has crept upward is an evaporation and top-off problem, not a salt problem, and adding more salt makes it worse. A technician who reads trends catches these before livestock does.

That is why the numbers get recorded rather than glanced at. The water change sits at the center of the visit

Replacement water is prepared before the visit, not mixed in the room from a bag and a jug. Saltwater is mixed with RO/DI water, circulated with a pump and heater for at least a day, then matched to the display within about a degree and 0.001 specific gravity. Dumping cold, freshly mixed salt into a reef is one of the most common causes of stressed coral, and it is entirely avoidable with a little planning.

Volume depends on the system. Ten to twenty percent on a normal interval suits most stocked tanks, and a heavily fed system may want more. The siphon does double duty: it removes water and it removes detritus, so we work through low-flow corners, behind rockwork and under overflow boxes where waste collects. On a mature sand bed we clean in sections across successive visits rather than turning the whole bed over at once, which protects the bacteria living in it.

Refilling is slower than draining. Water goes back gently against the glass or into the sump so the sand stays where it belongs and nothing gets blasted off the rockwork. Salinity is checked again once the system has circulated, because a large change with slightly off water shows up immediately. Then the display level, the sump level and the top-off setpoint are all reset to where they should sit.

Glass, substrate and rockwork each need a different tool

Glass gets cleaned before the water goes out, so anything scraped loose leaves with the siphon. A magnet cleaner handles film algae, and a blade lifts coralline from the corners. On acrylic the blade never comes out; only a plastic scraper and a soft pad belong on that surface, and a single grain of sand caught under a magnet will leave a scratch you look at for years. The silicone seams get a careful pass rather than a hard scrub.

Rockwork is blown down, not scrubbed. A turkey baster or a powerhead aimed into the aquascape lifts detritus into the water column where the siphon and the filter socks can catch it. Nuisance algae gets pulled by hand where it is accessible, since scraping it into fragments spreads it. We leave coralline on the rock deliberately, because it looks right and it competes with the algae you do not want.

The parts nobody sees get the same treatment. Overflow weirs and teeth clog with film and snails, return nozzles narrow with coralline and quietly cut flow, and drilled bulkheads collect grime around the gasket. None of this is about sterilizing a tank. A display scrubbed to bare rock loses the biological surface it depends on, so the aim is a clean view and unobstructed flow, not a lifeless system.

Equipment servicing is where professional aquarium cleaning earns its keep

Filter socks or filter floss are swapped every visit, because a loaded sock stops filtering and starts leaching. The skimmer cup and neck get washed, and the body gets a rinse often enough that the pump venturi stays clear. Chemical media follows its own schedule: carbon and GFO are typically replaced monthly, and used past that they either stop working or, in the case of GFO, strip phosphate faster than the tank can tolerate.

Pumps are the part owners forget. Return pump and powerhead impellers pick up coralline and grit, lose flow gradually, then fail on the hottest weekend of the year. A vinegar soak and a soft brush on a routine cycle prevents most of that. Heaters are checked against an independent thermometer rather than trusted, because a stuck heater is one of the few faults that can empty a tank overnight. Controllers, probes and float switches all get tested rather than assumed.

The visit ends with a restart and a written handover. Every pump is confirmed running, the top-off is verified, the sump level is correct and the lights are back on schedule.
