A cleanup crew is a workforce with specific job descriptions, and buying one well means matching animals to the surfaces that actually need work in your tank. Counts matter, species matter, and the age of the system matters more than either. What a cleanup crew is actually for

Think of the crew as four separate job descriptions rather than one product. Grazers work film algae off glass and rock. Sand workers turn the top layer of substrate and eat what falls into it. Scavengers find uneaten food before it rots in the rockwork. Specialists deal with one nuisance each, like bubble algae or Aiptasia. A bag containing thirty of one snail covers a single job and leaves the other three undone, which is the most common reason a new crew looks busy for a fortnight and then stalls.

Match the animal to the surface you want cleaned. Trochus and Nerite snails work vertical glass and rock faces. Cerith snails move between glass and sand and burrow at night. Nassarius snails stay buried until food hits the water, then surface in numbers. Scarlet reef hermits (Paguristes cadenati) pick at hair algae and detritus in the crevices snails cannot reach. If your glass is clean but the sand looks dirty, buying more grazers solves nothing at all.

There is also a clear limit to what any crew can do. Inverts consume algae, they do not consume the nitrate and phosphate that grow it. A tank fed heavily or running on unfiltered tap water will keep producing algae faster than animals can crop it. Cyanobacteria and dinoflagellates are barely touched by most inverts, and a few will actively avoid them. Fix the nutrient input first, then let a properly sized crew hold the line.

The working rule we use is one grazing snail for every two to three gallons of display volume, then adjusted against how much rock is in the tank. A 40-gallon breeder with forty pounds of open branching rock offers far more grazing surface than a 40-gallon tall with a solid stack, and it can carry more animals without starving them. Count the surfaces you can see algae on, not the number printed on the aquarium box, and buy toward the lower end if you are unsure.

Sand and scavenger jobs are sized separately. Nassarius snails work out at roughly one per five gallons, since too many will strip the sand bed of anything organic and then slowly starve. Hermits sit near one per five to ten gallons, and every hermit needs a supply of empty shells in a range of sizes or it will take one off a snail. A single fighting conch suits about thirty gallons of open sand footprint, and two in the same small tank will compete.

Tank age is the variable most people ignore. A six-week-old reef simply cannot feed a full crew, so start at half the numbers above and add the rest once the tank actually grows something. Specialists come last, and only when there is a problem to solve. One emerald crab (Mithraculus sculptus) per thirty gallons handles bubble algae, and one or two peppermint shrimp (Lysmata wurdemanni) will work on Aiptasia, though neither is a guarantee and both may sample coral once their target runs out.

What a good cleanup crew package should contain

A package worth buying covers several jobs and names what is in it. For a typical 40-gallon mixed reef with a mature sand bed, a sensible starting crew looks like this:

  • 10 to 15 Trochus or Nerite snails for glass and rock film algae

  • 5 to 8 Cerith snails, which work both glass and the top of the sand

  • 5 to 8 Nassarius snails as buried scavengers for uneaten food

  • 3 to 5 scarlet reef hermits, with a dozen spare empty shells

  • One specialist only if needed, such as an emerald crab for bubble algae

Species names matter more than the label on the bag. Astraea snails cannot right themselves if they fall, so a tank with a bare glass bottom loses them steadily. Large Turbo snails clear hair algae quickly but bulldoze frags and outgrow their usefulness. Mexican Turbo snails come from cooler water and often decline in a tank held at reef temperature. Ask for the scientific name of anything you are handed, and pass on anything nobody can identify.

Some animals belong nowhere in a crew, whatever the packaging says. Sand sifting starfish (Astropecten) strip a sand bed of microfauna and then starve quietly over several months. Horseshoe crabs outgrow every home aquarium sold. Larger hermits and Sally Lightfoot crabs turn predatory once they mature, and any crab sold without a species name is a gamble with your snails. A good crew is small, identifiable and matched to the tank rather than sold by weight.

Buying a cleanup crew in the Chicago area

Local pickup does more for inverts than it does for fish. Snails and hermits handle bagging poorly, and a crew that spends twenty-four hours in transit arrives with a portion already failing, which is hard to spot until they stop moving days later. In a Chicago winter, box temperatures drop fast during any delay, and inverts are less forgiving of cold shock than most livestock. Inspect before you pay. Healthy snails hold firmly to the glass, and one placed on its back should begin righting itself within a minute or two. Shells should be intact rather than pitted or drilled. Hermits should have all their legs and react when the shell is touched. Shrimp should carry straight, unbroken antennae and move deliberately. Ask whether the invertebrate system has ever run copper, because copper-based medications stay in silicone and rock, and inverts do not tolerate it at any dose.

The drive matters too. Put bags in an insulated container rather than on the floor of a cold car, keep the trip short, and avoid leaving livestock in the vehicle while you run other errands. Availability changes week to week with what arrives at the shop, so call ahead and confirm what is actually in the tanks before you plan a crew around a particular species. Building the list with someone who can see both your tank and the stock saves a second trip.

Adding a crew and knowing when to restock

Acclimate slowly. Inverts are more sensitive to salinity swings than fish, so drip acclimate over forty-five to sixty minutes with tank water, keeping salinity in the 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity range on both sides. Discard the bag water rather than pouring it into the display. Add snails to the glass at the waterline rather than dropping them onto the sand, and place hermits near the rock so they can find cover before anything with fins notices them.

Add the crew in stages and watch what happens over the following fortnight. If the glass still fouls in three days, the tank can support more grazers. If snails start wandering the upper glass with nothing to graze, you have overshot and they will thin out. Numbers naturally drop over a year, and a crew that keeps shrinking faster than that is telling you something about the tank rather than the animals.
