Seasonal aquarium care means changing what you watch and when, rather than running the same February routine in July. Seasonal aquarium care starts with the room, not the tank

Water temperature follows room temperature, slowly in a large volume and quickly in a small one. Put a thermometer in the room as well as in the tank and watch both for a week. The gap between the readings, and how fast it moves across a day, tells you which season will give you trouble.

Humidity is the second half of the story. Evaporation drives salinity, and evaporation rises sharply when the air is dry. A tank losing half a gallon a day in August can lose well over a gallon on a January morning with the furnace cycling. Your HVAC schedule is the third factor, and it is not the same thing as the weather. Most reef fish and corals sit comfortably between 76 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, but they do not tolerate moving three or four degrees inside a day. Judge the tank by its daily range, not by the reading you happen to catch.

Longer daylight is the second spring problem. Film on the glass, brown diatoms across the sand and green hair algae in the rockwork tend to arrive together in March and April. Shortening the photoperiod rarely fixes that on its own. Test nitrate and phosphate, look honestly at how much you are feeding now that the fish are more active, and check whether the skimmer still pulls dark skimmate or has quietly gone thin.

Open windows are the spring hazard almost nobody plans for. Paint fumes, oven cleaner, insect spray and scented candles reach the water through the surface and the skimmer air intake, and a canopied tank pulls room air harder than an open-top display. Summer heat is the fastest way to lose livestock

Heat is the season's genuine risk, and it moves faster than anything winter does. Warm water holds less dissolved oxygen exactly when fish and corals need more of it, so a display that drifts to 85 degrees can go from stressed to dying inside an afternoon. Increase surface agitation, aim a fan across the water, raise the light fixture if the room is already hot, and be ready to open the canopy. A chiller earns its keep on a stony coral system in a warm top-floor apartment.

Storms are the other half of a Chicago summer. When power drops, flow stops first and oxygen goes next, and a warm tank runs out of margin sooner than a cool one. A battery-backed air pump, or a small backup supply feeding one powerhead, keeps a system alive for hours rather than minutes. Skip feeding during an outage, leave the lid open, and leave the heater unplugged in July.

August travel is the last summer trap. A tank that looks fine under a daily glance is not fine when the house sits empty for ten days, the thermostat has been pushed up and the reservoir was two-thirds full when you left.   • Pull the return and circulation pumps, soak impellers in a vinegar solution, then rinse and reseat them

  • Replace the RO membrane or DI resin once the TDS meter stops reading zero on product water

  • Clean the top-off float or optical sensor and confirm it shuts off when the reservoir runs low

  • Clear salt creep off cords and drip loops, and test every GFCI outlet feeding the system

  • Retire expired test kits and restock salt, carbon and any dosing solutions you run

Preparing for winter is the point of the exercise. Keep a spare heater and pump on the shelf, because the week a heater dies is the week nothing is open and the roads are bad. Mix and heat replacement saltwater to tank temperature before it goes near the display, since a ten-degree difference in a five-gallon change can stress a cleaner shrimp or a torch coral. Livestock brought home in January wants an insulated box and a short trip.

Ice storms bring the winter version of the summer outage, with heat loss as the enemy instead of oxygen. Blankets or foam board over the tank slow the drop, and a large volume buys hours a nano tank does not have. Keep the lid closed, stop feeding, and restore circulation before you worry about lighting.
