A reef tank does not need the same attention every week of the year, but it does need attention every week of the year. Good saltwater aquarium care in Chicago means knowing which parts of the routine never change and which ones shift as the building around the tank changes, because a system in a sealed-up house in January behaves differently from the same system in August with the windows open. Saltwater aquarium care starts with the numbers that never move
Some targets hold regardless of the month. Most mixed reefs we maintain sit near the middle of these ranges, and the value of the range is stability rather than the number itself. A tank held steadily at the lower end of alkalinity will outperform one that swings across the whole range every week. Write your targets down, test against the same kit each time, and change one thing at a time when a reading drifts.
Temperature between about 76 and 79 degrees Fahrenheit, with daily swing kept under a degree or two.
Salinity around 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity, or roughly 33 to 35 parts per thousand.
Alkalinity in the range of 8 to 11 dKH, held within about 0.5 dKH day to day.
Calcium near 400 to 450 ppm and magnesium near 1,250 to 1,350 ppm.

The weekly work behind those numbers is equally constant. Water changes with properly mixed and heated salt water, glass cleaning, skimmer cup emptying, filter sock or roller checks, top-off reservoir refills and a genuine look at every animal in the tank. Feeding is daily, testing is at least weekly for alkalinity, and monthly for the rest unless something is moving. None of that changes between June and December.

October through April, the heating season changes evaporation first
Furnace season dries the air in a Chicago home dramatically, and the tank is the first thing to notice. Evaporation climbs, sometimes doubling, and an auto top-off reservoir that lasted ten days in September empties in five. If top-off cannot keep up, salinity rises quietly over weeks, which is one of the most common causes of unexplained coral decline we find on winter service calls. Size the reservoir for the season, not for the year, and check it more often than feels necessary.
Heaters do more work in the same months, which makes this the right time to plan for their failure. Two smaller heaters instead of one large unit means a single failure cannot cook or chill the system, and a controller with an independent temperature probe gives you an alarm before the livestock tells you. Watch for cold drafts too. A tank on an exterior wall or near a frequently opened door will run a wider daily swing than the thermostat setting suggests.
Winter brings a subtler problem that catches people out. A sealed house accumulates carbon dioxide, and a skimmer breathing that indoor air will drive tank pH down, often to the high 7s in the afternoon and lower overnight. Running an air line from the skimmer intake to a window or using a carbon dioxide scrubber usually fixes it. May through September, heat load and storms take over
Summer reverses the problem. Room temperatures climb, pumps and lights add their own heat, and a tank that held 77 degrees all winter starts drifting toward 82. Cooling fans across the sump surface are the cheapest fix and work well, though they push evaporation higher again and add humidity to the room. Chillers are the reliable answer for larger systems or homes without central air. Whichever you use, remember that warmer water holds less oxygen, so keep the skimmer running well and the surface agitated.
Light and algae follow the same curve. Longer days, brighter rooms and sunlight reaching the glass all feed nuisance algae, and summer is when most of the nutrient-related calls come in. Keep the photoperiod on a timer rather than the room's daylight, watch the blinds on south and west-facing windows, and stay ahead of phosphate rather than reacting to a bloom. Feeding often increases in summer as well, since households are busier and more people pass the tank.
Storm season is the part that deserves a written plan. Chicago summers bring outages, and a marine tank without circulation has hours rather than days. A battery-backed air pump or powerhead, a plan to blanket the tank to hold heat and the discipline not to feed during an outage will carry most systems through. If you travel in July, arrange for someone competent to look in, because an auto top-off that runs dry over a two-week vacation does real damage.
The jobs that come due once or twice a year
Consumables have their own calendar and ignore the weather entirely. Reverse-osmosis systems are the clearest example: test the total dissolved solids at the tap and after the membrane a few times a year, replace sediment and carbon prefilters roughly every six to twelve months depending on your water, and expect a membrane to last a couple of years. Deionization resin gets changed as soon as product water reads above zero, not on a date. Skipping this is how phosphate and silicate enter a tank that is otherwise well kept.

Pull and clean return and circulation pump impellers on a quarterly cycle, sooner if flow drops or noise changes.
Strip and deep clean the protein skimmer, including the neck and air line, at least twice a year.
Calibrate pH and salinity probes against fresh reference solution every one to three months.
Replace test kit reagents at their expiration date, since old kits cause more chemistry chases than real problems do.
Press the test button on every GFCI monthly and inspect cords, drip loops and the inside of the stand for salt creep.
Clean light optics and check fixture output annually, because LED output falls slowly enough that corals adapt before you notice.
Plumbing deserves an annual look as well. Union fittings loosen with vibration, bulkhead gaskets age, and flexible tubing stiffens and cracks near unions. Take twenty minutes once a year to check every joint above and below the water line, run a hand under the sump, and confirm the overflow still handles full flow without noise. Finding a weeping union in daylight is far better than finding it at two in the morning.
