Blue Tang Care: Tank Size, Diet and Problems

Paracanthurus hepatus is the fish people ask us for by sight rather than by name, and blue tang care is where a lot of new reef keepers get caught out. It is a striking, active, genuinely rewarding animal that grazes film algae and fills a big tank with movement. It is also a fish that outgrows most first systems, needs more open water than almost anything else sold at the same size, and picks up ich more readily than nearly any other reef fish. None of that makes it a poor choice. It makes it a fish worth planning for well before you buy one.

Blue tang care starts with the adult size nobody plans for

The specimens sold in shops are usually two to three inches long and look like a fish for a mid-sized display. They are not. Wild adults are commonly cited at up to twelve inches, and aquarium fish regularly reach eight to ten inches given the room and the food to get there. This is a deep-bodied, disc-shaped animal rather than a slim one, so the visual mass it occupies in a tank grows considerably faster than the length figure alone suggests.

Growth is quick through the first couple of years and then slows, which is exactly what catches people out. A tang that looked proportionate in a 75-gallon at purchase can look cramped within eighteen months. Lifespan compounds the problem. Surgeonfish are frequently quoted at a decade or more in captivity, and well-kept individuals go considerably longer, so the tank you buy is the tank that fish lives in for a very long stretch of its life.

Buy at a sensible size as well. Very small specimens under about two inches ship poorly and often arrive thin, and a thin tang is a hard fish to bring back. We look for a full belly profile, clear eyes, no pinching behind the head and steady, purposeful swimming rather than hiding. Swimming space and water quality set the real minimum tank

Volume on its own is a poor guide for this species. Blue tangs cruise, and what they need is an uninterrupted lane to cruise along, which means length and open water rather than gallons. A six-foot footprint is the sensible floor for an adult, and something in the region of 180 gallons is the number most experienced keepers land on. A tall 120 with a dense rockscape serves a tang far worse than a longer, shallower tank of identical volume.

Rockwork should leave the front third of the tank clear. These fish also wedge themselves into caves at night and when startled, sometimes lying flat on one side in a way that looks alarming and is entirely normal behavior. The aquascape therefore needs both open swimming water and a crevice the adult body genuinely fits into. Aquascaping around a tang is subtractive work: you build noticeably less rock than the room seems to invite.

Water quality has to be steady rather than perfect. Typical targets are salinity of 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity, temperature held between 76 and 79 degrees, pH around 8.1 to 8.4 and alkalinity of 8 to 11 dKH, with strong flow and good surface agitation for gas exchange. Surgeonfish are oxygen-hungry and poor at tolerating swings. Stability across the whole week matters far more than any single reading you take on a Sunday afternoon.

Ich susceptibility is the defining risk in blue tang care

Tangs carry a thin mucus coat over fine scales, and Cryptocaryon irritans exploits that readily. A fish moved from a collector to a wholesaler to a shop to a display inside two weeks is under continuous stress, and stress is what turns a low parasite load into a visible outbreak. Assume any newly acquired tang is carrying something. That single assumption is the most useful habit in blue tang care that we can pass on.

Quarantine properly rather than casually. A four to six week observation period in a bare-bottom tank with its own equipment lets you watch feeding and respiration and treat without dosing a display full of corals. Copper held at the manufacturer's therapeutic level, the tank transfer method and hyposalinity are all in common use. Copper tends to be the usual choice for tangs, verified with a test kit rather than assumed from the dose on the label.

If ich does reach the display, understand that the parasite has a substrate stage and that reef-safe additives do not reliably break its cycle. The dependable route is removing every fish for a fallow period, commonly given as somewhere between six and eleven weeks at normal reef temperatures, and treating them elsewhere. Marine velvet moves much faster and can kill within days, so a tang breathing hard with a dusty sheen needs attention immediately.

Diet runs on algae and plankton, and both halves matter

Blue tangs are grazers with a strong planktivorous streak. In the wild they take a great deal of zooplankton from the water column while still working algae off the rock, which sets them apart from a yellow tang or a kole. Feeding only meaty frozen food tends to produce washed-out color and a tendency toward head and lateral line erosion. Feeding only greens produces a thin fish. The diet has to run on both tracks.

Dried marine algae on a clip is the backbone of that. Offer a sheet most days, secured low enough in the water column that the fish grazes calmly instead of racing to the surface, and remove whatever is left after a few hours so it does not foul the water. Marine-sourced algae is the right product here. Terrestrial greens such as lettuce and spinach are poor nutritional substitutes and are not something we would feed regularly.

A workable feeding week for a healthy adult looks roughly like this:

  • Dried marine algae on a clip five to seven days a week, offered in the morning.

  • A quality herbivore pellet or spirulina-based flake once daily, in small amounts.

  • Frozen mysis or enriched brine two or three times a week for the planktivorous side of the diet.

  • A vitamin soak on the frozen food about once a week, which supports color and helps with lateral line problems.

Feed small and often rather than heavily and rarely. Grazers have short guts and do better with several modest offerings spread across the day, and a tang that eats steadily resists the parasites that would otherwise take hold. Check the belly profile weekly while you are at it. A slight convex curve is right, and a straight or concave line behind the gills means the fish is losing ground and needs either more food or a health check.

Tankmates, temperament and a fish that carries a scalpel

Blue tangs are among the more even-tempered surgeonfish, though they still defend space against fish of a similar shape, and two of them in an average home system usually ends badly. Adding tangs together as juveniles into a large tank works far more often than introducing one into an established territory. Clownfish, wrasses, anthias, cardinalfish, gobies and blennies all make straightforward company, and the tang generally ignores corals entirely.

The scalpel deserves genuine respect. Each side of the caudal peduncle carries a sharp spine the fish erects when it feels threatened. It tangles in nets, tears fins during disputes with other fish, and it will cut you. Watch for slow problems rather than dramatic ones.
