Custom Aquarium Design: From Sketch to Installed Tank

A custom aquarium design is a construction project that happens to hold water. The tank itself is usually the simplest part of it, and the decisions that determine whether you still like the result in five years all happen before anyone cuts a sheet of acrylic. We have run this process for homes, restaurants and offices across Chicago and the suburbs for more than thirty years, and it moves through the same six stages every time: brief, site survey, drawings, fabrication, installation and handover. Knowing what each stage produces tells you what to prepare and where your input genuinely changes the outcome.

The brief decides more about a custom aquarium design than the glass does

The first conversation is not about tanks. We ask what the room is for, who will look at the aquarium and from where, whether you want freshwater or marine, and what you picture living in it. A planted community tank, a fish-only saltwater display and a stony coral reef are three different machines wearing the same furniture, and each one drives a different lighting spec, a different filtration path and a different service interval. Answering that question first stops the project from being redesigned halfway through fabrication.

Viewing angles come next, and they matter more than most people expect. A tank seen only from a sofa can be shallow front to back and finished cleanly on three sides. A room divider viewed from both faces needs rockwork that reads well in two directions, which costs more scaping volume and usually more light. Height is the other quiet decision. Set the water line near seated eye level in a living room, and nearer standing eye level in a lobby where people walk past rather than sit.

The last part of the brief is the honest one. How much of the weekly work do you want to do yourself, and how much should we carry? That answer shapes automation, because auto top-off, dosing pumps and a controller cost money at build time and save labor for years. A site survey turns your brief into buildable constraints

Nothing gets drawn until we have stood in the room. The survey starts with the floor, because water alone weighs about 8.3 pounds per gallon before you add rock, sand, stand and cabinet. A 120-gallon system can approach half a ton once wet and stocked, and where that load sits relative to the joists matters. Running a tank across the joists, or adding blocking underneath, is straightforward during planning and disruptive afterward.

Then we measure the path in. Doorway widths, stair turns, ceiling heights, elevator car dimensions and a building's freight rules all decide whether a display can arrive in one piece or has to be built as a multi-panel assembly. Chicago has plenty of narrow stairwells and older door openings, and a drawing that cannot physically reach the room is worth nothing. Access often settles material too, since acrylic weighs roughly half what glass does.

Utilities and climate close out the survey. Marine systems want dedicated GFCI circuits, drip loops on every cord and somewhere sensible to put reverse osmosis gear and a reservoir. We look for the nearest water source and drain, because a technician carrying buckets across carpet is a problem you pay for on every visit. Forced-air heat in January and humid air in July both change evaporation rates, so a tank beside a south-facing window or a supply register gets flagged now rather than after the first algae bloom.

Drawings turn a custom aquarium design into something you can approve

The drawing set is where the project stops being a conversation. You should expect a scaled elevation, a plan view, a section through the stand and cabinet, and a separate sheet for the sump or equipment area. Panel thickness, seam placement, overflow position and weir style are specified here rather than decided on site. If the tank is recessed into a wall or viewable from two rooms, the drawings also show the framing, the access panel and how the maintenance side is reached.

An equipment schedule sits alongside the drawings and lists every component with a reason attached. Return pump sized for the turnover the livestock needs, skimmer rated above the display volume rather than at it, lighting chosen for the water depth and the target corals, heating or cooling sized for the room rather than the catalog, plus controller, top-off and dosing if the plan calls for them. Seeing the list in writing lets you ask why a part is there, which beats discovering it later.

Approval is the last inexpensive moment to change your mind. Moving an overflow, switching a viewing panel to low-iron glass, adding a second access hatch or changing the cabinet finish costs a drawing revision now and a rebuild later. We would rather spend an extra week here than improvise during installation. Once the drawings are signed, lead times start, and the schedule is driven by the shop rather than by anybody's calendar.

Fabrication runs off site while the room is prepared

Tank fabrication happens in a shop, not in your living room. Acrylic panels are routed, bonded and given time to cure and relieve stress before the tank is moved, and rushing that step is how a seam fails two years in. Glass builds are cut, polished, siliconed and left to cure fully before any water touches them. Cabinetry and stand work run in parallel, matched to the room's existing millwork where that matters, and plumbing is usually dry-fitted in the shop so the on-site work stays short.

The room gets its own preparation list at the same time. Electricians pull the dedicated circuits, a plumber runs the water line and drain if the design includes them, the floor is reinforced if the survey called for it, and any wall opening is framed and finished. Doing this while the tank is still in fabrication keeps installation to a day or two instead of a week of trades queuing in your hallway.

We also start the biology early wherever we can. Rock can be cured and seeded off site so the system arrives with some biological capacity instead of starting from nothing. Dry rock is less expensive and free of pests but takes longer to become useful. Live rock brings bacteria and hitchhikers, both the welcome and the unwelcome kind. Either way, a head start on the nitrogen cycle means the display is ready for stock sooner.

Installation, cycling and a handover you can actually use

Installation day starts with protection and ends with a leak test. Floors and corners get covered, the stand goes in and is leveled carefully, because a tank on an uneven base carries stress in its seams for its whole life. The display is set, shimmed, plumbed, then filled with plain fresh water and run for several hours before anything else happens. Finding a weeping bulkhead with tap water in the tank is an inconvenience; finding it after the aquascape and salt is a far worse day.

Aquascaping and cycling follow. Rock is positioned for flow and for the swimming space the stocking list needs, sand goes in, and the system is brought up to temperature and, for marine tanks, to a salinity of roughly 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity. The cycle then runs its course while we test ammonia, nitrite and nitrate on a schedule. Stocking is staged across weeks rather than done in an afternoon, so the biological filter grows into the load instead of being buried under it.

Handover is the stage most people never hear about and the one that quietly pays off. You should receive target parameters in writing, a feeding schedule, labeled valves, a plain explanation of what each pump and controller does, and a shutdown procedure for a power outage.
