Professional Aquascaping: What You Get for the Money

Hiring out an aquascape looks like paying somebody to arrange rocks. It is closer to paying for the twenty decisions that arranging rocks commits you to for the next decade. Aquascaping services cover the layout, certainly, but also flow paths, service access, how much sand you can keep clean, where corals or plants will sit once they have tripled in size, and what happens during the months after the tank is finally full. We have built and rebuilt scapes across Chicago and the suburbs for more than thirty years. The ones that still look right after five years were planned that way from the first sketch.

What professional aquascaping services actually cover

The work splits into four stages, and rock only shows up in the third. A design consult establishes what the tank has to do and what you want to look at. Sourcing gathers the specific stone, wood or substrate that design needs, which takes longer than most people expect. Build day assembles and bonds the structure. Then a grow-in period turns a clean layout into a living one. Skip any stage and the other three get harder, usually in ways that only become obvious months later.

What aquascaping services are not is a decorating visit. We are not setting ornaments on top of a finished system. The structure we build determines flow, filtration behavior and how much of the tank you can reach with a hand or a magnet cleaner, which is why the scape gets designed alongside the equipment rather than after it. A layout that blocks a return nozzle or buries a powerhead will fight the system every single week for as long as it stands there.

Most clients arrive in one of two situations. Either the tank is new and they want the aquascape resolved before livestock shows up, or the tank has run for years, the rock has slumped, algae has claimed the low-flow pockets and they want it rebuilt without losing the corals. Both are ordinary work for us. The second takes considerably more planning, because everything alive has to be held somewhere stable and warm while the structure comes apart and goes back together.

The design consult decides the layout before anything gets wet

A consult starts with the room rather than the tank. We look at where you sit, how far your eye lands from the glass, how tall the stand puts the water line and which side people approach from. A 24-inch-deep tank viewed from eight feet away needs a different structure than a 15-inch-deep tank you walk past at arm's length. Sight lines decide how much depth the scape has to imply, and implying depth is most of the craft.

Equipment comes next, because rock has to be placed around water movement rather than in spite of it. We map return nozzles, powerheads, overflow boxes and any wave pump before drawing a single arch, then set a target turnover for whatever you intend to keep. Soft coral and LPS systems are comfortable somewhere around ten to twenty times display volume per hour. SPS-dominant reefs usually want more, with the flow broken up rather than aimed straight at the rock.

The last part of the consult is a stock list, or at least a direction. Branching Acropora need spacing you plan for at placement, not after they touch. Euphyllia send out sweeper tentacles at night that reach several inches past the skeleton. In freshwater, a dwarf hairgrass carpet needs open substrate and light reaching it, which changes how much rock you can afford through the middle. We would rather argue about that on paper than move a bonded structure later.

Hardscape sourcing is selection work, not shopping

Rock is chosen, not ordered. For marine builds we start from dry reef rock or cured live rock depending on how quickly the system needs to mature, then pick individual pieces for shape: shelves, arches, branches and a few heavy footing pieces that will not shift. Freshwater scapes lean on seiryu, dragon stone or river rock, and that choice is chemical as much as visual, since seiryu leaches carbonate and will lift hardness and pH in a soft-water tank.

Most people over-buy. The old rule of a pound of rock per gallon came from an era when rock was the filter, and modern systems run their biology in the sump instead. A scape with open sand and real negative space usually needs half that or less, and it looks better and services faster. Weight matters too, because every pound of stone rests on the same floor as the water, so a 180-gallon build deserves a look at the stand and the joists underneath.

Wood and substrate get the same treatment. Spider wood and mopani float for weeks and leach tannins, so we soak or boil them in advance rather than weighting a piece down and hoping. Sand grain size decides what you can keep: sugar-fine aragonite blows around under strong flow, while 1 to 2 mm grades stay put and let a sand-sifting goby work. Build day is dry stacked, bonded and filled in one sitting

The structure gets built dry, outside the tank, on a tarp. Working inside an empty display sounds easier and is not, because you cannot step back far enough to judge it and every adjustment risks the silicone seams. We assemble on the floor, walk around it, photograph it, take it apart and rebuild it. That is normal, not indecision. A scape that reads well from three angles on the floor almost always reads well once it is standing in water.

Bonding is where a structure earns its lifespan. Cyanoacrylate gel sets fast and holds small contact points, two-part epoxy putty fills gaps and carries real load, and acrylic or fiberglass rods pin larger pieces so an arch cannot pivot. On a heavy marine scape we use all three, then let the epoxy cure fully before anything gets moved. A structure that shifts after corals have encrusted across it becomes a rescue job rather than a repair.

Filling is deliberate. We lay the sand, seat the structure on the glass instead of on the sand wherever possible so nothing can burrow underneath and topple it, then fill onto a plate or a bag to avoid cratering the bed. Water clouds for a day or two, which is dust rather than trouble. Livestock waits. The scape gets a full nitrogen cycle before anything alive goes in, and corals follow only once the tank holds parameters.

Grow-in support is where aquascaping services earn their keep

The first ninety days are the part nobody advertises and every tank needs. New rock and new sand run through a predictable succession: diatoms dust the surfaces somewhere around week two or three, film algae follows, and cyanobacteria will try its luck in any corner the flow misses. None of that means the scape failed. It means the system is finding its footing, and the answer is usually patience, better flow and a cleanup crew rather than a bottle.

Placement changes as things grow. Corals we set with six to eight inches between colonies close that gap faster than most owners expect, and a Euphyllia that looked polite in March will be reaching into its neighbor by summer. Planted tanks need the opposite attention: Cryptocoryne melts back after transplant and then returns, hairgrass has to be trimmed so it spreads instead of climbing, and Anubias rhizomes rot if anyone buries them in substrate.

Parameters do the quiet work underneath all of it. On a reef we hold salinity around 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity, alkalinity somewhere in the 8 to 11 dKH band, and nitrate and phosphate low but not absent, because a sterile tank starves corals as surely as a dirty one smothers them. Can you rebuild the scape in a tank that is already running?

Yes, and it is common work. Corals and fish move into heated, aerated holding containers using the tank's own water, the old structure comes out, and the new one is dry fitted and bonded before anything returns. Expect a short cloudy period and a small nutrient bump afterward, which is why we watch parameters closely for a few weeks.

Do I need live rock, or will dry rock work just as well?

Dry rock is clean, inexpensive and free of hitchhikers, but it starts sterile and lengthens the cycle. Live rock seeds bacteria and fauna immediately and shortens that wait, at the cost of possible pests. Many of our builds use mostly dry rock with a few live pieces added to seed it, which balances both.
