What Aquarium Design, Service and Moving Cost in Chicago

Every tank is different, so a single number rarely answers the question honestly. What we can do is show you the variables, because aquarium cost is driven by a handful of decisions you make early and then live with for years. Size, material, where the tank sits, what swims in it and how often somebody services it all pull the figure in different directions. We have designed, installed, maintained and relocated aquariums across Chicago and the suburbs for more than thirty years, and the same five factors explain almost every quote we write.

Tank size and volume set the floor on aquarium cost

Volume is the first lever, and it moves more than the glass. A larger tank needs a heavier stand, a bigger sump, stronger return and circulation pumps, more light over a wider footprint, and more salt or conditioner every time water is changed. Doubling the display volume rarely doubles the aquarium cost, but it does raise every line at once, and it raises the running cost for as long as the tank is wet.

Footprint matters as much as gallons. A tall, narrow tank and a wide, shallow tank of the same volume light very differently, and the shallow one usually needs more fixtures to cover the length. Depth front to back changes how much rock you need for a natural aquascape and how easy the glass is to clean. We often steer a first-time client toward a slightly wider, shallower build because it looks better and services faster.

There is a practical ceiling in most homes too. Above roughly 180 gallons, floor loading, stand engineering and water changes all step up a level, and the project starts to include structural questions rather than only aquatic ones. That is not a reason to avoid a big tank. It is a reason to raise it during design, when moving a wall or reinforcing a joist is still cheap compared with discovering the problem after the build.

Glass or acrylic changes both build and lifetime cost

Material is the second decision, and it splits the budget in two directions. Glass is harder to scratch, holds clarity for decades and generally costs less to fabricate in standard shapes. Acrylic is far lighter for the same volume, can be formed into curves and seamless corners, and is more forgiving if the tank has to be carried up a narrow Chicago staircase. Neither is simply cheaper once you count the full life of the system.

The trade-off shows up during service. Acrylic scratches from a stray grain of sand on a magnet cleaner, though light scratches can be polished out. Glass shrugs off cleaning but cannot be repaired the same way if a panel is damaged, and a large glass tank is heavy enough that installation may need extra hands or equipment. A wall-recessed or ceiling-suspended build usually pushes the decision toward acrylic for weight reasons alone.

Custom shapes belong in this part of the conversation. A rectangle in a standard size is the least expensive thing we can build. A peninsula, a corner unit, a room divider viewable from both sides or a bow front all need bespoke fabrication and often bespoke lighting and plumbing to match. Those choices are worth it when the tank is a centrepiece, but they belong in the plan from day one rather than as a late change.

Access and room conditions quietly move the number

The hardest costs to guess from a photo are the ones outside the tank. A ground-floor room with a nearby utility sink and a dedicated circuit is straightforward. A third-floor condo with a service elevator booking window, a shared corridor and no water within thirty feet is a different job, and the aquarium cost reflects the extra labour, the protection of shared spaces and the plumbing needed to make maintenance sane.

Utilities are the second half of this. Marine systems want dedicated GFCI circuits, drip loops and somewhere to put an auto top-off reservoir. If we have to run new power, add a drain or build a cabinet that hides a sump and a reverse-osmosis unit, that work is real and it appears on the estimate. Doing it properly at installation is far less expensive than retrofitting once the tank is full and stocked.

Room conditions matter in this climate specifically. Chicago homes swing from dry forced-air heat in January to humid air in July, and both ends affect evaporation, salinity stability and how hard a heater or chiller has to work. A tank near a south-facing window or a radiator will need more equipment and more attention than the same tank on an interior wall. We flag that during the site survey rather than after the first algae bloom.

Livestock and aquascape are a range, not a line item

Rock, sand and hardscape come first, and they are more consequential than people expect. Dry rock is inexpensive and starts sterile, which means a longer cycle. Live rock costs more and seeds the system faster. Sand depth and grain size change what inverts you can keep. These choices set the aesthetic and the biology at the same time, and they are among the easiest places to spend or save without hurting the tank.

Livestock is where the range widens sharply. A hardy freshwater community, a reef of soft corals and a mixed reef with SPS colonies sit at very different points, and stocking order matters as much as the list. We stock in stages so the biological filter keeps up, which spreads that part of the budget over months rather than a single invoice. Prices and availability change constantly, so we quote livestock separately and confirm what is in stock before pickup.

Equipment often follows the livestock rather than the other way round. A fish-only system needs sensible filtration and flow. A stony coral reef needs stable alkalinity, serious lighting, dosing and reliable top-off. Deciding what you want to keep before choosing gear avoids the common and expensive path of buying twice, once for the tank you started with and again for the tank you actually wanted.

Service cadence and relocation are the long-tail costs

Maintenance is the part of aquarium cost people forget to plan. We service tanks weekly, bi-weekly, tri-weekly and monthly, and the right interval depends on volume, stocking density, filtration and how much of the work you want to do yourself. A heavily stocked reef with automatic dosing and a busy household usually wants a shorter interval. A lightly stocked, mature freshwater display can run comfortably on a longer one.

What a visit includes changes the value more than the frequency does. Water testing, water changes with properly mixed and aged saltwater, glass and equipment cleaning, filter media, pump servicing and a livestock health check are all part of a genuine service call. A cheap visit that only wipes the glass leaves the chemistry drifting, and that is how a tank quietly becomes a much larger repair. Relocation is the last variable, and it is worth understanding before you need it. Moving an established system means holding livestock at temperature, saving as much mature water and biological media as possible, transporting rock and equipment safely and re-establishing stability at the other end. Distance matters less than complexity and access.
