Freshwater vs Saltwater: What a Year Really Costs

The build gets all the attention, and then the tank runs for a decade. Aquarium running costs are the quieter number, the one that repeats every twelve months whether or not anyone is thinking about it, and it is where freshwater and saltwater genuinely part ways. We will not put figures on any of this, because prices move and every household in Chicagoland pays differently for power and water. What we can do is name the categories, rank them by how much weight each carries over a year, and explain what pushes each one up or down.

Where aquarium running costs accumulate over twelve months

Think in five buckets rather than one lump sum. Consumables cover salt, purified water, filter media, reagents and supplements. Energy covers heating, lighting and every pump running around the clock. Replacement hardware covers bulbs, impellers, membranes and the fixture that eventually fails. Livestock covers what does not survive the year. Labor covers either your Saturday mornings or a service visit.

Freshwater and saltwater share every bucket, but the weights differ sharply. A freshwater community tank leans hardest on energy and food, with modest testing and almost no dosing. A reef adds salt mix as a permanent line, makes purified water mandatory instead of optional, multiplies the number of tests, and introduces supplements that get consumed continuously. The gap widens as coral demand grows.

Salt mix and purified water are the biggest divide

Salt is the line that has no freshwater equivalent, and its size follows simple arithmetic: display volume multiplied by water change percentage multiplied by frequency. A large reef changing ten percent every week gets through several hundred gallons of mixed saltwater across a year, and every one of those gallons needs salt. Buckets bought in larger sizes stretch further, but volume and cadence set the total.

Purified water is the second half of that story. Saltwater systems need RODI water for mixing and for topping off evaporation, and the unit itself consumes sediment and carbon prefilters, a membrane and DI resin. Chicago-area tap water is chloraminated and moderately hard, which shortens carbon and resin life noticeably, and the waste ratio means the water meter also notices. A TDS meter tells you when media is genuinely spent rather than guessing.

Freshwater is not zero here, just much lighter. Most community tanks need only a dechlorinator, and tap water straight from the line is fine. Keepers of soft-water species, planted tanks with specific hardness targets or shrimp colonies do run RODI and then remineralize it, which narrows the gap. Electricity is the quiet half of saltwater aquarium running costs

Three loads matter, and only one of them is obvious. Circulation runs continuously: a return pump plus powerheads draw their wattage for all 8,760 hours in a year, which is why a modest difference in pump efficiency compounds into a real difference by December. Heating is intermittent but demanding, and its duty cycle depends entirely on the gap between room temperature and tank temperature.

That gap is a local issue. A Chicago winter with forced-air heat means a heater cycling far more than it does in May, while a July heat wave can push a reef toward needing fans or a chiller, and fans increase evaporation, which increases RODI use. Lighting is the third load: reef fixtures run brighter and longer than most freshwater ones, and photoperiod and intensity are levers you control directly.

Everything else is small individually and additive in aggregate. Skimmers, dosing pumps, auto top-off, UV sterilizers, wavemakers and controllers all draw a little, constantly. Lids reduce evaporation and heater demand, DC pumps usually draw less than older AC equivalents, and a tank placed away from a window or a radiator asks less of both the heater and any cooling. These choices are made once and paid for every month.

Bulbs, media, reagents and supplements run on their own clocks

Light sources age on a schedule. T5 tubes and metal halide lamps lose useful output over roughly six to twelve months and need replacing even though they still light up, which makes them a genuine annual line. LED fixtures avoid that, but they are not permanent either: drivers, fans and optics fail eventually, and a reef fixture works harder than a freshwater one, so its service life is usually shorter.

Media and reagents follow consumption rather than the calendar. Filter socks, floss, carbon, phosphate media and cartridge inserts all get replaced on a cycle set by stocking and feeding. Test kits are the underrated one: a reef keeper checks alkalinity weekly or more often, along with calcium, magnesium, nitrate and phosphate, and reagents expire whether or not the kit was finished. Freshwater testing after cycling is far less frequent.

Supplements scale with what you keep. A soft coral tank may consume almost nothing beyond water changes, while a stony coral system pulls alkalinity and calcium down continuously and needs two-part dosing or kalkwasser plus trace elements. Planted freshwater tanks have their own version of this in fertilizers and carbon dioxide refills, which is one of the few places where a freshwater setup can rival a reef.

Livestock replacement and service visits decide the total

Livestock replacement is the category nobody budgets and everybody eventually pays. Marine fish and corals cost more per animal than most freshwater stock, so a single unstable week, a heater failure or a pest outbreak can erase months of careful saving. The strongest lever here is not shopping habits but stability, since tanks that hold parameters steady simply lose less. Quarantine belongs in the same sentence.

Freshwater replacement tends to be gradual and modest, a few fish across a year, some plants, the occasional shrimp. That is part of why the two systems diverge so much less on the shopping side than people expect and so much more on the consumables side.
