Live rock does the structural work that wood and plants do in freshwater. So the first thing we ask is which of those photographs you keep going back to. If it is coral, no freshwater build will scratch that itch, so plan for salt from the start. If it is a green scape with schooling fish, a reef will feel busy and expensive by comparison. There is a middle path: a fish-only system with live rock, which gives you tangs, wrasses and angelfish without coral lighting, dosing or the chemistry stony corals demand.

Budget the whole system rather than the tank

Both kinds of tank need the same skeleton: a stand that carries the load, a heater, filtration and reliable flow. The gap opens with what salt requires on top of that. Reverse-osmosis water instead of tap, salt mix by the bucket, a refractometer, a protein skimmer on most reef builds, higher-output lighting, and powerheads to push water through the rock rather than around it. A high-tech planted tank narrows that gap with CO2, a regulator and a pressurized cylinder, but rarely closes it.

Consumables are the part that keeps arriving after the build is done. A reef works through salt mix, reagents for alkalinity, calcium, magnesium, nitrate and phosphate, and media swapped on a schedule. A freshwater tank mostly needs dechlorinator, an occasional fertilizer dose and fresh media once or twice a year. The expensive mistake is buying twice. It happens when somebody sets up a fish-only saltwater tank, falls for coral eighteen months later, and finds the light, the flow and the top-off system all have to be replaced together. Decide the endgame first, then buy equipment that can grow into it. The same applies in freshwater: a low-tech tank of anubias and java fern will not carry a carpet of dwarf hairgrass without CO2, a stronger fixture and a richer substrate.

Money is a one-time conversation. Time is a weekly one, and it is where tanks are won or lost. Ask whether a fixed hour on the same day each week will survive your travel, your kids' schedule and the month your job goes sideways. A tank serviced on time in February still looks good in June, though the penalty for skipping differs sharply between salt and fresh.

The two routines diverge more in rhythm than in total effort. Automation covers the repetitive parts: an auto top-off holds salinity steady, dosing pumps hold alkalinity and calcium, and a controller can warn you before a stuck heater becomes a loss. Freshwater forgives. A new tank still has to cycle, ammonia and nitrite still have to read zero before fish go in, and nitrate still gets exported through water changes. Mistakes announce themselves slowly: cloudy water, a film of algae, one fish sulking in a corner rather than a wipeout overnight.

Reef chemistry runs in a narrower band. Typical targets are salinity around 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity, alkalinity between 8 and 11 dKH, calcium near 400 to 450 ppm, magnesium around 1,300 to 1,400 ppm, and a temperature holding within a degree or two rather than swinging with the room. None of those numbers is hard to hit once. Holding them steady week after week is the actual skill, and stony corals punish a sudden correction more reliably than a slightly wrong number.

Volume buys forgiveness in both directions. A 20-gallon planted tank is an easy first project, while a 20-gallon reef is one of the harder things in the hobby, because a small water column concentrates every error and every evaporation loss. If a reef is the goal, we steer first-timers toward the 40 to 75 gallon range: stable through a warm weekend, and small enough that a water change is one mixing bin rather than an afternoon of hauling.

A lid cuts evaporation and keeps wrasses and gobies in the tank, at the cost of a little light and gas exchange.

It means the honest version of the decision is a short list of constraints rather than a matter of taste, and once they are written down the answer usually picks itself.
