Advertised flow figures for propeller pumps are measured with nothing in the way. The impeller spins at full speed, the water leaves the shroud unobstructed, and the resulting number describes the pump's ceiling rather than its working output. Put that pump in a stocked reef with rockwork two feet away and the energy scatters immediately. A soft coral and LPS reef usually wants roughly ten to twenty times. An SPS-dominated tank often runs twenty to forty times or more, because those corals evolved in surge zones and depend on flow to carry waste off their tissue. Treat these as ranges, not rules.

Run the arithmetic before you buy. A unit capable of thousands of gallons per hour is a great deal of water in a 40-gallon tank, and while a controllable pump dials down, one running at the very bottom of its range is being asked to do something it was not designed around. Check the figure for your unit against your actual glass before mounting, and remember that a rimless low-iron tank and a standard braced tank of the same volume are often built from different thicknesses. Handling is where most damage happens. Bring the two magnet halves together slowly and from the side rather than letting them snap, keep fingers out from between them, and never let a magnet slam against the pane. Wipe both faces clean before mounting, since one grain of sand trapped under the outer half will grind a permanent arc into the glass. Move the pump by sliding it, never by pulling it off and replacing it.

Placement decides how well the pump works. Mid-height on a side panel, angled slightly upward and across the tank, gives a broad sweep that reaches the surface without excavating the sand bed. Aiming directly down or straight into the substrate produces a crater and a permanent sandstorm. Keep the intake a few inches clear of rockwork so snails and fragments cannot block it, and avoid aiming the outflow at the overflow, which short-circuits water into the sump.

Controller modes and tuning the IceCap FP-200 by eye

Controllable pumps offer categories of behavior rather than one fixed speed, and the useful move is to work through the modes your controller actually provides rather than assuming a feature exists. Broadly you will find a steady speed setting, some form of pulsing that builds a back-and-forth motion, a randomized pattern that avoids repetitive waves, a feed setting that pauses flow, and a reduced night setting. Read the manual for the controller in the box and confirm what yours offers.

Tune by observation. Start at a low speed, raise it gradually over several days and watch the tank rather than the display screen. Soft corals and LPS should sway gently, with polyps extended and no tissue flapping or retracting. Sand should stay where it belongs. Detritus should be lifted and carried toward mechanical filtration instead of settling behind the rock. Fish should be able to hold position without fighting the current, and any that hide constantly are telling you something useful.

Noise, maintenance and the failure modes to expect

A propeller pump that develops a hum or rattle is telling you something specific. Debris wrapped around the impeller is the most common cause, followed by wear at the shaft or bearing surfaces, followed by the pump body making direct contact with the glass and transmitting vibration through the pane. Check in that order. A pump that was quiet for a year and is suddenly audible has changed, and the change is usually a two-minute fix if you get to it early.

Cleaning is straightforward and easy to postpone for too long. Coralline algae and carbonate scale build inside the shroud and on the impeller, which costs you flow before it ever costs you noise. A soak in dilute vinegar and a soft brush restores most of it. The shaft in many propeller pumps is ceramic and snaps if flexed, so pull the impeller straight out rather than levering it.
