Reef Aquarium Maintenance: A Guide That Holds Up

A reef is not a saltwater tank with corals added. It is a chemistry project with a view, and its animals consume the very numbers you are trying to hold. Fish forgive a great deal. Stony corals do not, and reef aquarium maintenance is mostly the discipline of replacing what gets used at roughly the rate it gets used. The ordinary saltwater routine still runs underneath everything here. What changes is that consumption becomes continuous, top-off becomes critical, and the most useful instrument in the room is your own eye on the corals each morning.

Reef aquarium maintenance starts with stability, not with gadgets

Before anything reef-specific, the ordinary work has to be reliable: water changes on a schedule, glass and sand kept clean, mechanical media replaced before it rots, pumps serviced, salinity checked with a calibrated refractometer. Reef aquarium maintenance is an additional layer, not a replacement, and buying a doser to paper over a shaky routine has ended more reefs than it has saved.

What makes a reef different is continuous consumption. Stony corals build skeleton out of the water, pulling calcium and carbonate out of solution every hour of every day, and a well-stocked system can drop a full degree of alkalinity in twenty-four hours. Fish waste keeps producing nitrate and phosphate at the same time. So the tank is always moving in two directions at once, which is why a single large weekly correction works badly and small, frequent additions work well.

Stability therefore outranks any particular target. A tank held at 8.5 dKH for a year grows better corals than a tank that swings between 7 and 11 while averaging a textbook number. Tissue recession at the base of an Acropora, pale patches on a Montipora, or polyps that stay shut all afternoon are usually the end of a swing that happened days earlier. A simple log of tests and dose volumes turns those events from mysteries into something traceable.

Alkalinity, calcium and magnesium have to move together

These three behave as one system rather than as three separate readings. Alkalinity is the carbonate available for skeleton building and the buffer holding pH steady through the day. Calcium is the other half of that skeleton. Magnesium sits underneath both, keeping calcium and carbonate in solution instead of precipitating out as they otherwise would. Widely used hobby targets look like the list below, and holding your chosen value matters far more than landing in the middle of any range:

  • Alkalinity 8 to 11 dKH, tested at the same time of day and moved no more than 0.5 dKH in a day.

  • Calcium 400 to 450 ppm, which usually tracks alkalinity once dosing is balanced.

  • Magnesium 1,250 to 1,350 ppm, checked monthly rather than weekly since it moves slowly.

  • Salinity 1.024 to 1.026 specific gravity, the number that shifts all the others when top-off fails.

  • Nitrate and phosphate low but present, since a reef stripped to zero often pales and stops growing.

How you replace what corals use depends on the size of the demand. A young reef with a few frags is fine on water changes alone. Once daily alkalinity consumption passes roughly half a degree, a two-part dosing system on a timer becomes the practical answer, adding calcium and alkalinity separately in small measured amounts. Kalkwasser through the top-off line suits moderate demand and helps hold pH up. A calcium reactor suits heavily stocked stony systems where manual dosing has become a daily chore.

The failure modes are worth knowing before you start. Calcium and alkalinity added at the same spot at the same moment precipitate each other and can cloud a tank in minutes, so the two parts go in at different points and times. Raising alkalinity quickly on corals that have been sitting low burns tissue at base and tips, which is why you move slowly even when a number looks wrong. And no schedule survives an untested month, because consumption climbs as colonies grow.

A protein skimmer only helps when it is tuned and cleaned

Skimming pulls dissolved organic compounds out before bacteria mineralize them into nitrate and phosphate, which makes it the main export pathway on most reefs. A skimmer running correctly produces a steady head of foam that collapses into the cup as dark, foul liquid. Wetter skimmate removes more volume and more water; drier skimmate is more concentrated and slower. Neither is automatically right. Match it to your bioload and the nutrient numbers your corals are actually showing you.

Tuning is only half the job. The neck needs wiping weekly, or a film of organics builds and the foam stops climbing. The cup needs emptying before it overflows back into the sump. The pump and needle-wheel impeller need a soak in vinegar every few months, since calcium buildup on the blades quietly kills air draw. The air intake and any silencer collect dust and salt, and a restricted intake looks exactly like a failing skimmer.

Expect a break-in period on a new unit, often two weeks of erratic foam while surfaces condition. After that, a skimmer that goes flat is telling you something: a fresh water change, a new carbon or GFO reactor, a surfactant from hands or an aerosol, or a foam-suppressing additive. Skimming alone rarely holds nutrients where a stony reef wants them, so most established systems add a refugium, carbon dosing or phosphate-binding media, used slowly.

Auto top-off protects salinity better than any water change

Evaporation is the quietest threat to a reef. Salt does not evaporate, so every liter that leaves as vapor concentrates whatever remains, and a system losing a few percent of its volume across a week can drift meaningfully in salinity before anyone notices. Chicago winters make this worse: forced-air heat drops indoor humidity for months and pushes evaporation well above spring rates. An auto top-off holds that number steady between visits better than any manual routine can.

Build the top-off to fail safely rather than to fail often. Most reliable setups use two independent sensors, an optical switch for the fill signal and a mechanical float as backup, so one stuck sensor cannot empty the reservoir into the sump. Size the reservoir for several days of evaporation, not several weeks, and feed it only with RO/DI water. Tap water carries phosphate, silicate, nitrate, chlorine and sometimes copper, all arriving concentrated because you add water continuously.

The maintenance itself is small but not optional. Wipe the optical sensor monthly, since a film of algae or salt refracts light and produces a false reading. Check the pump line for a siphon path that could keep flowing after the pump stops. A reservoir emptying faster than usual often means a leak rather than heat. If you dose kalkwasser through the top-off, let it settle and keep the container sealed so it does not carbonate.

Corals report their own condition daily if you look at them at the same time each day. Full polyp extension, steady color and a clean tissue margin mean the system is holding. Slow retraction, browning, a receding line of white skeleton at the base, or a bleaching patch on one side of a colony are early signals. Zoanthids closing for a day is usually nothing; three days closed is a question. The value of the habit is comparison, not any single observation.

Placement is husbandry too, and most losses trace back to it. Soft corals and many LPS want moderate, indirect flow and moderate light. SPS colonies want strong, turbulent flow and higher intensity, acclimated over weeks rather than moved straight under a fixture at full output. Give every colony room to grow into, because an encrusting base that reaches a neighbor starts a chemical war you did not plan. Frags need dipping and inspection before they touch the display.

The other daily job is catching problems while they are small. Aiptasia, majano anemones, red bugs, flatworms and nuisance algae all start as something you could have removed by hand, and all of them are far harder once established.
