Reef systems fail slowly and recover slowly, which is why saltwater tank care works as a routine rather than a rescue. Most of the work is small and repetitive: two minutes each morning, an hour on the weekend, an afternoon once a month. Keeping to that schedule is what stops alkalinity swinging, nutrients climbing and equipment failing at the least convenient moment. What follows is the routine we run on the systems we service, with the ranges we aim for and the reasoning behind each interval, so you can either run it yourself or judge whether the person servicing your tank is running it.
What daily saltwater tank care actually involves
The daily job is observation, and it takes about as long as making coffee. Count the fish. Watch how they eat, because a fish that ignores food today is telling you something several days before spots or clamped fins appear. Look at coral polyp extension at the same hour each day, since a colony that stays closed through the afternoon has usually been stung, shaded or exposed to a parameter shift. Check the display temperature against the controller and against a second thermometer you trust.
Then look under the cabinet. The skimmer cup should be filling at a normal rate, and a sudden change in foam consistency usually follows a feeding change, a new additive or something dying out of sight. Note the level in the top-off reservoir, because evaporation is a useful proxy for room conditions and heater behavior. Listen to the return pump and powerheads for the first sign of a bearing going. Look for salt creep and dampness around unions and bulkheads.
Feeding is the one daily task that actively changes the chemistry. Feed what the fish clear in a couple of minutes, thaw and rinse frozen food rather than pouring the pack juice in, and resist the urge to top up because a tang looks hungry. Almost everything that lands in a nutrient problem starts at the feeding step. Nothing else needs doing every day, and chasing a test number with a dose is how stable tanks become unstable ones.
The weekly routine that holds parameters steady
Testing comes before any work that stirs the water. On a reef we test salinity, alkalinity, nitrate and phosphate weekly, and add calcium and magnesium when stony corals are growing quickly. Write the numbers down every time. A single reading tells you where the tank is; four readings in a row tell you where it is going, and the trend is what lets you adjust dosing by a small amount instead of reacting to a crisis later.
The water change follows. Ten to fifteen percent weekly suits most stocked systems, using saltwater mixed with RO/DI water, circulated for at least a day, and matched to the display on temperature and salinity before it goes anywhere near the tank. While the level is down, clean the glass, swap the filter sock or floss, wash the skimmer cup and neck, and siphon detritus from the low-flow corners where it collects rather than turning over the whole sand bed.
Finish with the small resets that keep the week honest. Blow down the rockwork with a baster or a powerhead so trapped waste reaches the filtration, refill the top-off reservoir, check dosing containers and confirm the pumps restarted. Monthly tasks that prevent the slow failures
Chemical media runs on its own clock. Carbon and granular ferric oxide are typically replaced monthly, because exhausted carbon stops adsorbing and simply occupies flow, and old GFO either does nothing or, when it is fresh and over-sized for the system, strips phosphate faster than corals tolerate. Change one thing at a time. Swapping media, adding a new light schedule and increasing dosing in the same week leaves you no way to tell which change caused what.
Pumps are the monthly job most owners skip. Return pump and powerhead impellers accumulate coralline and grit, lose flow gradually enough that nobody notices, then seize on the hottest weekend of the year. A soak in diluted vinegar and a soft brush restores most of that flow. Check heaters against an independent thermometer instead of trusting the dial, calibrate the refractometer against 35 ppt standard fluid, and calibrate pH and ORP probes on the same schedule.
The rest of the monthly list is inspection. Check RO/DI output with a TDS meter, since a reading that has crept above zero means resin or the membrane is nearing the end of its life and your top-off water is quietly carrying silicate and phosphate into the display. Clean lighting lenses and fans, clear the overflow weir and return nozzles, and test the auto top-off float switches by hand rather than assuming they still work.

Published ranges vary between sources, and the exact figure matters far less than holding whatever you choose. These are the targets we work to on a mixed reef, and they are typical hobby ranges rather than promises for any particular system. Print them, keep them where you test, and record what you actually measure against them.

Stability outranks perfection on every line of that list. Corals adapt to an alkalinity of 8 dKH or 11 dKH, but very few adapt to a tank that visits both in a week. The same applies to salinity, where a slow rise from evaporation does more damage than a value at the low end of the range. Rate of change is the number to watch, and it is the one most test logs never record.
When a reading is off, verify before acting. Run the test again, ideally with a second kit or a different reagent lot, because a bad test has ruined more reefs than a bad parameter. Correct slowly: no more than about 0.5 to 1 dKH of alkalinity a day, and salinity adjusted over days rather than hours. Then find the cause, since a number pushed back into range without a reason will drift straight back out.
How stocking and equipment change your saltwater tank care schedule
Livestock sets the workload. A fish-only system with hardy stock forgives a missed week and needs little more than feeding discipline, water changes and filtration upkeep. Soft corals and most LPS sit comfortably in the middle. An SPS-dominant reef consumes alkalinity and calcium fast enough that daily dosing and twice-weekly testing become normal, and a tank like that punishes an interrupted routine within days rather than months.
Volume and automation change the shape of the work rather than the amount. Larger systems dilute mistakes and drift more slowly, which buys time. Dosers, controllers and automatic water-change systems reduce manual labor, but each one adds an item to inspect, since automation fails quietly and confidently.
