RODI Water and Salt Mixing for Chicago Reef Tanks

Every stable reef we service starts with the same unglamorous thing: a container of RODI water that nobody had to think about. Reverse osmosis with a deionization stage turns municipal supply into a blank slate, and mixing salt into that blank slate carefully is what keeps salinity, alkalinity and calcium from wandering week to week. Neither step is hard. Both are easy to do sloppily, and sloppy shows up months later as nuisance algae, drifting alkalinity or corals that never quite color up. This is the routine we run on the systems we maintain across Chicago and the suburbs.

How an RODI water system works, stage by stage

An RODI unit is four jobs mounted on one bracket. A sediment prefilter catches rust, silt and pipe scale so the stages behind it are not blinded early. One or two carbon blocks then strip chlorine and chloramine, and this is the step people underestimate, because chloramine needs far more contact time than free chlorine and will quietly destroy a membrane that is not properly protected behind enough carbon.

The reverse osmosis membrane does the heavy lifting, forcing water through a semipermeable film and sending rejected dissolved solids down a waste line. A healthy membrane rejects roughly 90 to 98 percent of what reaches it. Rated output assumes about 60 psi of feed pressure and water near 77 degrees, and a Chicago basement in February supplies neither. Cold feed water can halve production, which is normal rather than a fault.

Deionization resin finishes what the membrane starts. It exchanges the last stubborn ions, silicate among them, and takes the reading to zero. Because DI is a polishing stage rather than a workhorse, its life depends entirely on how well the membrane ahead of it is doing its job. TDS readings tell you when a cartridge is finished

A dual inline TDS meter is the cheapest useful diagnostic in the hobby. One probe sits after the membrane and one after the resin, so each stage can be judged separately. Municipal supply around here usually arrives somewhere in the low hundreds of parts per million. After the membrane you want single digits, and after the resin you want a flat zero.

Those numbers tell you what to change and when. If the post-membrane figure climbs from 5 to 15 while the tap reading holds steady, the membrane is tiring or feed pressure has dropped. If the post-DI reading shows 1 or 2, the resin is finished and should be swapped that day. Sediment and carbon are typically replaced twice a year, membranes every two to four years, and resin whenever the meter says so.

Two failure modes hide from the meter entirely. Silicate breaks through exhausted resin before conductivity moves much, so a diatom film on fresh sand a week after a water change is a resin warning even at zero TDS. Carbon exhaustion is silent too, with nothing on the display changing while chloramine oxidizes the membrane. Dating each cartridge with a marker at install prevents both surprises.

Mixing salt into RODI water without shocking the tank

Salt goes into water, never water onto salt. Fill a clean container with room-temperature RODI water, start a powerhead, then add salt gradually while it circulates. Tipping a full measure into still water drives local pH and alkalinity high enough to precipitate calcium carbonate, which leaves a chalky film on the container walls and a batch that tests low on both calcium and alkalinity for reasons that look mysterious a week later.

Reef salinity targets sit between 1.024 and 1.026 specific gravity, roughly 33 to 35 parts per thousand, and the instrument matters as much as the number. A refractometer calibrated against 35 ppt standard solution is trustworthy; a swing-arm plastic hydrometer with a bubble stuck to the needle is not. Calibrate before mixing a large batch rather than after a problem appears. Most mixes land near half a cup per gallon, but brands vary.

Mix to match the tank rather than the label. A fresh batch should sit close to the display on alkalinity, calcium and magnesium, with typical reef targets of 8 to 11 dKH, 400 to 450 ppm calcium and 1250 to 1350 ppm magnesium. If the display runs 7.8 dKH and the new water tests 11, a large water change becomes a swing rather than a correction. Test the batch, not only the tank.

Aging a batch before it goes near the display

Aging is the step most people skip and the one that separates a water change the tank ignores from one it reacts to. Freshly mixed saltwater is still dissolving, still off-gassing carbon dioxide and still settling on a pH. Twenty-four hours of circulation with a heater running is what we do on every system we service, and it costs nothing except planning ahead.

  1. Fill a clean, labeled container with RODI water at room temperature.

  2. Add a powerhead and a heater, and get the water moving before any salt goes in.

  3. Add salt in stages over several minutes, letting each addition dissolve fully.

  4. Circulate for at least twenty-four hours with the heater set to display temperature.

  5. Check salinity with a calibrated refractometer, then adjust with salt or more water.

  6. Test alkalinity and calcium against the display before you change any water.

  7. Transfer slowly, keeping the new water within a degree of the tank temperature.

Heat matters more than the calendar does. Water within a degree of the display avoids the small thermal shock that makes fish flick and corals sulk for an afternoon, and a warm circulating batch dissolves salt far more completely than a cold, still one. A container living in an unheated garage or a cold basement corner will take longer to come up to temperature than most people allow for in January.

There is a point past which precision stops paying. A batch mixed a day ahead, tested once and used inside a week beats an obsessively measured batch that sits for a month. Storing water and salt through a Chicago year

Store water in food-grade HDPE containers with lids, kept out of the light. Pure water is an aggressive solvent and will pull what it can from an unsuitable drum, and stored water in daylight grows algae as soon as anything organic reaches it. Opaque containers beat clear ones. Label them, keep one for fresh RODI water and another for mixed saltwater, and never swap their roles.

Salt mix is hygroscopic, which means it pulls moisture from the air and clumps. A bucket left open through a humid summer can set into a solid block, and partly hydrated salt no longer measures accurately by volume. Stored water is not immortal either. Fresh product absorbs carbon dioxide over a week or two and turns mildly acidic, which is harmless for mixing but worth knowing before you use it for top-off. Mixed saltwater is best used within a couple of weeks, and anything older deserves a stir and a retest. Rinse containers between batches and keep one pump dedicated to water changes alone.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use bottled distilled water instead of RODI water?

Distilled water works chemically and is a reasonable stopgap for a nano tank, but the cost per gallon becomes painful quickly on anything larger. It also arrives in containers you did not fill, so quality varies by supplier. For a system needing several gallons a week, a small RODI unit pays for itself within a season.

How much waste water does an RODI unit produce?

Most household units send three to four gallons to the drain for every gallon they make, and cold winter feed water pushes that ratio higher. The waste line is ordinary tap water, so many hobbyists route it to a laundry sink, a rain barrel or houseplants. A flush valve extends membrane life by clearing rejected solids off the film.

Do I really need to mix salt a day in advance?

For routine water changes, yes, and it is the easiest good habit to adopt. Twenty-four hours lets the salt dissolve completely, the carbon dioxide off-gas and the temperature equalize. In an emergency, a well-circulated batch of a few hours is usable, but test salinity and alkalinity carefully before it goes into a stocked reef.
