Shipping live coral is a race against water quality, and everything we do to a box is meant to slow that race down. A frag sealed in a bag has a fixed amount of oxygen and a fixed amount of water to dilute what it excretes, so the clock starts the moment the bag is tied. Packing, insulation, heat or cold packs and the shipping service you choose all buy time against the same problem. So does the person on the receiving end, because a box opened promptly recovers far better than one that sits in a hallway all afternoon.
Shipping live coral is mostly a water quality problem
Corals in transit are not usually killed by movement. They are stressed by falling temperature, rising ammonia and dropping oxygen inside a sealed bag, and those three things feed each other. A stressed coral sheds mucus, that mucus decays, and decay consumes oxygen while releasing more ammonia. Cold slows metabolism and buys time; warmth speeds everything up, which is why an overheated box is more dangerous than a slightly cool one.
Water volume in the bag is the buffer. Roughly a third water to two thirds air, or pure oxygen where it is available, gives a frag enough dilution and enough gas exchange for an overnight trip. Too much water leaves too little headspace and adds shipping weight; too little water lets ammonia concentrate quickly. Corals with heavy tissue and lots of slime, such as some leathers and larger polyp stony pieces, need more water per animal than a small encrusting frag does.
The last part of the equation is the coral itself. A freshly cut frag is an open wound and travels worse than one healed to its plug for a couple of weeks. Pieces that have been fed heavily the day before ship dirtier. We prefer to send corals that have been settled, healed and lightly fed, because a coral that leaves in good shape has margin to spend during transit. There is no way to remove risk from a shipped animal, only ways to reduce it.

How a coral box is packed to survive the trip
Each frag is bagged individually so a piece that fouls its water does not take the rest of the order with it. Sharp skeletons and tall branches get a piece of foam or a folded bag corner to blunt them, then the bag is squared off with rubber bands so it cannot roll into a point. Everything is double-bagged, because a single pinhole leak is the most common way an otherwise perfect box arrives dry and lost.
Bagged corals are then packed so they cannot move. Newspaper, foam sheets or air pillows fill every gap, and the bags sit upright in the center of the box rather than against a wall where outside temperature reaches them fastest. Around all of that goes a foam liner, usually one to two inches thick, inside a corrugated box. The liner is doing most of the temperature work; the cardboard is mainly there to survive handling.
Labeling matters more than people expect. A box marked as a live animal shipment with arrows and handling notes gets treated better on a conveyor, and it also tells a driver not to leave it in direct sun. We seal the seams, keep total weight sane so nobody drops it, and photograph the packed box before it closes. If something arrives wrong, that photo is the difference between a guess and a real explanation.
Heat packs, cold packs and the weather at both ends
Heat packs are oxygen-activated and typically rated for 40 or 72 hours, and they belong taped to the inside lid or a side wall, never in direct contact with a bag. Corals do not want to be warmed; they want to not get cold, and a pack pressed against a bag can cook the animal nearest to it. Between the pack, the foam liner and the water itself, the goal is to hold the box roughly in the seventies rather than to hit a precise number.
Summer flips the problem. A box sitting on a hot loading dock or in a delivery van can climb well past anything a reef tolerates, so cold packs, wrapped so they never touch the bags directly, take the place of heat packs. Getting this backward is the classic mistake. Check the forecast at both ends and along the route, not just at home, since a mild Chicago morning and a hot afternoon two states away are one box and one day apart.
Weather is also a legitimate reason not to ship at all. During a deep cold snap or a heat wave we would rather hold an order for a few days than send a coral into conditions no packing can fix. Why we time shipping live coral to the middle of the week
Transit time is the variable with the most leverage. Overnight service costs more than two-day ground and is not really optional for a sealed animal, because every extra twelve hours in the bag compounds the ammonia and oxygen problem. Shipping live coral on a service that promises next-morning delivery keeps most boxes inside a window the packing can actually cover.
Day of the week matters just as much. Boxes shipped late in the week risk sitting in a facility over a weekend, which turns an overnight trip into a three-day one. Monday through Wednesday is the sensible window in most of the country, with holidays checked in advance. If the destination is remote or the forecast looks bad, holding the box at a local facility for pickup is often safer than a truck route that ends with a long afternoon in a van.
Somebody has to be there. The best packing in the world does not survive a box left on a porch in February or on a south-facing step in July. Confirm the delivery address is one where a person can receive the box within an hour or two of arrival, and keep the tracking number somewhere you will actually look at it. If plans change midweek, tell the sender before the label prints rather than after.
What to do in the first hour after the box arrives

Then float the bags in the display or a container of tank water for fifteen to twenty minutes to close the temperature gap, and resist the urge to rush a coral into a tank that is several degrees off from its bag.
