Coral Health: Early Warning Signs Reef Keepers Miss

A coral rarely crashes without warning. It spends days or weeks giving small, repeatable signals that something has shifted, and most are visible to anyone who looks at the tank at the same time each evening. Reading coral health early is a skill of observation more than testing, because a test kit reports what the water is doing today while the animal reports what the last two weeks did to it. We have serviced reef systems around Chicago for more than thirty years, and the colonies that recover are the ones whose owner noticed a change while it was small.

Coral health is judged against a baseline, not a memory

Memory is a poor instrument for this. A colony that browns over six weeks looks normal on every day it is losing color, because the change per day is smaller than your eye resolves. The fix is boring and it works. Photograph the same three or four colonies from the same angle, under the same lighting phase, once a week. A phone photo taken at eight in the evening under full blues is a record you can compare, and comparison is where a slow problem becomes obvious.

Describe normal in words as well. Note when each coral opens and closes, how far the polyps extend, whether the tips are pale or colored, and how it reacts to food. A hammer that inflates by mid-morning and stays out until the lights dim has a pattern. Once you know the pattern, a morning where it sits half closed becomes information rather than a vague worry, and you can act before any tissue is lost.

Baselines matter most around changes to the system. A new light, a new pump, an unusually large water change, a dosing adjustment or a fresh bucket of salt all reset the conditions your corals had adapted to. If you recorded the tank the week before, you can tell whether what follows is adaptation or damage. Adaptation settles within a week or two and stops. Damage keeps moving in one direction, and it usually speeds up.

Polyp extension is the fastest signal a coral gives you

Polyps respond within hours, which makes extension the earliest practical warning available to you. A euphyllia that billows past its skeleton, a torch that sweeps after dark, a Duncan that reaches for food, a zoanthid colony that opens flat and wide: each has a normal reach. Reduced extension for one evening is noise, and healthy corals close for reasons of their own. Three consecutive days of it, alongside refused food, is a signal worth chasing.

Read where the closure is, not only that it happened. A colony shut on one side and open on the other is reacting to something local: a neighbor's sweeper tentacles, a jet of high flow, or a shadow that appeared when equipment moved. A colony closed uniformly across every head is reacting to the water itself, which points at chemistry, temperature or a recent addition rather than at placement.

Feeding behavior is the confirmation step. Most LPS corals respond to food even when partly retracted, so one that ignores mysis it would normally grab is telling you the tissue is stressed rather than tucked in. SPS corals do not offer that test, so watch instead for polyps that stay in through the middle of the photoperiod. Soft corals deflate on their own schedule, and a leather shedding its waxy coat for a few days is normal.

Tissue recession tells you where the trouble started

Recession is the sign people notice last and should notice first, because it is the one you can measure. Look at the boundary between living tissue and bare skeleton, then look again three days later. Freshly exposed skeleton is bright white and clean. Skeleton bare for a week or more picks up a green film of algae or a dusting of detritus. That difference separates something still in progress from the scar of an event that stopped.

Direction narrows the cause. Tissue pulling back from the base of a plug or the underside of a colony points at something settling there: detritus in dead flow, algae growing into the tissue margin, or a pest working under the skirt. Tissue burning back from the tips of an acropora is a different problem, and when it moves fast it is the pattern hobbyists call rapid tissue necrosis, usually set off by a swing in alkalinity or temperature.

Rate decides urgency. A millimeter of recession over two weeks on one LPS head is worth watching and correcting calmly. Half a colony in two days is an emergency, and the usual response is to remove the piece, cut back to clean tissue, rinse it in fresh saltwater and isolate it until the margin holds. If a colony is losing tissue by the day and nothing obvious explains it, send us a photo and your recent test numbers before changing things at random.

Color shift is slower, and the direction matters

Color moves over weeks, so it is a poor early alarm but excellent confirmation of a slow drift. Browning is the most common shift in a home reef, and it means the zooxanthellae population has grown: too many nutrients, too little light, or both. The coral is not dying. It is adapting in a direction most keepers do not want, and correcting it takes patience, since pushing light or nutrient export too hard creates the opposite problem.

Pastel, washed-out color is the shift to take seriously. It means the coral carries fewer symbionts than it wants, the early stretch of the road that ends in bleaching. Very low nutrients, an alkalinity swing, a new fixture run too bright too soon, or a temperature that crept up in a warm week can all produce it. Fluorescence is the subtle version of the same reading. Many corals show their brightest greens and reds under actinic light, and those pigments fade before overall color does. If a colony that used to glow under blues looks flat, treat it as an early change rather than a trick of the light. New growth tips are naturally paler than mature tissue, so pale edges advancing outward are growth. Pale patches inside established tissue are the opposite.

What to check first when coral health changes

Resist the urge to change three things at once. Many losses we get called out to see involve a keeper who raised alkalinity, moved the coral and added a supplement in the same evening, which hides the original cause and often adds a second problem. Work through the checks in a fixed order instead, and change one variable at a time so the coral's response over the following days tells you something.

  1. Count how many corals are affected. One points at placement, flow or a pest; all of them point at the water.

  2. Test alkalinity first, then salinity and temperature, which explain most sudden changes.

  3. Compare against typical targets: alkalinity 8 to 11 dKH, salinity 1.024 to 1.026, temperature steady between 76 and 79 degrees.

  4. Check nitrate and phosphate together, since undetectable readings stress corals as reliably as high ones.

  5. List every change from the last three weeks: salt, equipment, media, dosing, feeding.

  6. Look an hour after lights out with a dim flashlight, when pests are visible.

Alkalinity comes first because it is the parameter most likely to move on its own and the one corals tolerate least. A swing of two or three dKH inside a day closes polyps across the whole tank and can start tip recession on stony corals even when every other number reads fine. Consistency beats a perfect target, so a steady 8.5 dKH does more for coral health than a tank bouncing between 7 and 11 while somebody chases 9.

Pests earn the night check because they hide. Flatworms sit under LPS skirts, red bugs are barely visible without magnification, and montipora-eating nudibranchs match the color of the coral they eat. If one coral keeps closing while its neighbors behave normally and chemistry is stable, assume something is on it, and inspect the piece out of the tank under a bright light before medicating a whole system.
